“And I am assuming you will be the one to kill me?” he scoffs.

“You and all the fuckers standing behind you thinking themselves gods and masters. You will all die at my hand tonight, little brother - you and your children.” Axel goads Kazimir even more.

This seems to work because Kazimir lets go of Katherine and I rush out to grab her, cradling her in my arms while pulling out the stakes from her abdomen. “I have you, little lamb,” I say in a shaky voice.

She doesn’t meet my eyes and sobs sadly as she holds onto me. Her heart thuds loudly in my ears, drowning everything else out, including the Vasile brother’s fighting, until I realize that five heartbeats have disappeared. Five heartbeats that can only belong to the council members standing behind Kazimir.

I turn slowly, not knowing what the fuck I’ll find now, but hoping it would be Axel with Kazimir bleeding out at his feet. But when I finally catch the scent as I turn, I know that it’s not that, not at fucking all.

Alpha Ryker drops two hearts to the ground and breathes out a strained sigh while regarding us with a disapproving look. This is when I notice his eyes - a pale green, not the eyes of a werewolf Alpha at all.

“Can someone please tell me who the fuck invited these parasites into my territory?”

GABRIEL

Adeathly silence falls over everyone when Ryker speaks and even I am left stunned. He did what we all said we would do… he just killed the entire fucking council except for the Vasiles.

Axel has Kazimir pinned to the ground with his hand around his neck, both staring at Ryker when Kazimir jumps up and takes a careful step back. He looks at his dead comrades, all of them desiccated and eyes glazed over.

“What… w-why are you here?” Kazimir stutters, his eyes nearly bulging out of his head when he looks at Ryker.

Ryker turns his gaze on Kazimir and grins.

“I don’t recall ever inviting you back here, Vasile. As per an arrangement I had with your father, the next time this fucked up council enters my country, you’re all dead. I’m just keeping my end of the accord.” He says, wiping his hands on his jeans.

“But how… HOW—”

“How did I know you were in town? I could smell you three cities over, Vasile. I allowed you and your sister to enter since you never truly stayed more than a night or two, but inviting these parasites? Not while I’m still here.” Ryker answers him, then gestures behind him. “I think this belongs to you.”

Ryker’s Gamma, Blight, slinks out of the shadows and throws something at Kazimir’s feet that causes him to cry out… something round and blonde. We all stared wide-eyed at the sight before us and what Kazimir holds up.

The head of his sister, Eirisse.

“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!” he cries out, cradling the head to his chest and openly sobbing. “NO! You took her life, now bring her back!”

Ryker crosses his arms. “That’s not how it works and you know it.”

I have never seen Kazimir like this before. In fact, I never knew Kazimir had an emotional bone in him. But looking at and seeing the heartbreak etched on his face makes me think differently. Did he actually love his sister?

I turn my gaze to Axel and Gustav, seeing the same incredulous look on their faces - wide-eyed and slack-jawed. If we all knew the way to get to Kazimir was to kill Eirisse, I think we would have planned this better.

Katherine stirs in my arms and swings her legs out of my grasp, pushing me away from her as she gets to her feet. “Katherine—”

“No,” she answers without even looking my way, then silently walks inside the mansion. I am torn between following her and seeing what happens here when Axel walks forward and speaks.

“I have heard of you from my father; the green color of your eyes, that mark on your neck, able to blend in and shift into any supernatural creature of your choosing, older than even the Gods themselves.” Axel shakes his head, dumbfounded. “You’re the Pale Rider, aren’t you?”

Ryker chuckles. “I haven’t been called that in a few millennia,” he says, then turns his gaze on me. “Any business you have to sort out with this cunt, do it before sunrise, or I’ll deem you all enemies.”

I walk forward when I see him turning his back to walk away. “Wait; what the fuck? What just happened here, Ryker? Who exactly are you?”

Ryker stops in his tracks, then turns his head to the side. “I’m someone who can’t interfere in the affairs of humans and supernatural creatures alike. But when a blood accord is broken, I’ll take the lives of all those I deem guilty. I don’t have a beginning or an end, but I do have a purpose.”

With that cryptic as fuck explanation, Ryker walks out of the estate with his Gamma right behind him. The Gamma turns back to look at us with a grin and blazing blood-red eyes; not red like an Alpha or Lycan, not even the red of a vampire.

“What the fuck is going on here?” I murmur mostly to myself, but everyone turns to me at that moment.

Aiden shakes his head, the fear in his eyes palpable. “I can’t believe I got to fucking see that,” he says while his brother nods in agreement.
