I cannot fault him for being confused and having his emotions all over the place since he has a deep hatred for humans. What I cannot forgive him for is lying to me.

We come to a stop in front of Void, and he follows me inside to our VIP section upstairs. Without a word said, he gets a bottle of Jack and two glass tumblers before sitting down next to me.

It’s midnight on a Thursday and over 80% of the patrons are supernatural creatures, the rest are humans who are either stupid or brave.

“I’d say congratulations are in order,” he says and hands me a tumbler with two fingers' worth of Jack. “To the Preutescu bloodline, may it prosper at your hands once more.”

I grin when he says this and down the liquid before slamming the glass on the table in front of us, then bracing my elbows on my knees, watching as an odd emotion flits across his eyes.

“Remember how head over heels I was with Angelique?” he says and the both of us laugh at the memory. “I’m sure you would have preferred that she be my Fated.”

“No offense, but no one was good enough for any of my sisters,” I say and give him a look while pointing my finger at him. “Not even Valentine.”

“Too late, I’m already offended,” he grumbles, then downs two more glasses while pretending to be hurt.

Angelique, Amerie, Lucienne, and Myrcella - my beautiful sisters all dead before they found their Fated. I sit and silently seethe while sipping on the liquid; the anger hitting me harder knowing the people who were responsible for it are still alive and continue to kill. We never found Angelique’s body.

She’s the only one missing from the tomb, but I know she’s gone because our Blue Thread is severed.

“Xenia was there tonight,” I say, noticing how he blanches at the name.

He places the tumbler next to mine and pours two more while shaking his head. “I know, they avoided me,”

“Avoided you? How?” I frown.

“Our eyes met, and they ran the other way. When I followed and gave chase, they were gone; which makes no sense since all three SUVs are still at the estate with all the dead hunters accounted for. Valentine had the place searched for them while you were out cold and found nothing.” He says, shrugging.

“Perhaps they had another getaway car stashed behind the mansion,” I say, knowing Valentine would never have missed someone hiding out inside our nest.

He nods. “Perhaps, but why run from me?”

I lean back and sigh. “How long were you torturing them before you tasted their blood?”

His eyes become solemn and he looks down at the glass in his hands. “A day or two, but it was more of a mind game than violence. After that, I left for a few days and when I returned and attempted to drain them, I found I couldn’t and when I looked again, I saw the thread.” He scoffs, then downs the liquid.

He pins me with a conflicted glare, then he sits forward and holds his head in his hands, shaking his head.

“You know my history, Gabe; you know what the humans did to my family and me before you saved my life. So why would Goddess Nyx tether me to one of them, especially a hunter? Is this my curse for killing so many people without remorse?”

I can’t help but chuckle at what he’s just asked me, especially since it was such a serious question.

“No, I don’t think this is your curse, Nikolas, but this might not be your blessing, either. If your Fated finds out that you cannot hurt them, they might use that knowledge against you since they’re loyal to Death’s Temple.”

“So what do I do?”

The pain and confusion are enough to render me speechless, but right now, Church needs a firm hand to guide him. Yes, I am still pissed off with him for lying to me, but that will fade once he proves himself to the nest again.

“We need to find Xenia. I’ve heard that even if the other person hasn’t tasted their Fated’s blood yet, they still feel that attraction to that person. We see how Xenia feels when you’re around them and take it from there.” I say, not knowing what else to say about this, but he seems to agree with the idea.

“Wait, are you telling me to find Xenia?” he frowns when he asks this, and I nod.

“After we move to DC, you’ll be free to start your search. We just need to get settled into our new nest first, before anything else.” I say.

This seems to bring some light back into his miserable eyes and he pours us more Jack. I don’t think any of us expected Goddess Nyx to bless him with a human Fated, especially if she knows what Church went through during the last moments of his human life.

Church and his entire family were caught up in the gold rush and trekked across the country with high hopes of giving their children better lives. But his family, along with five other grown-ups, broke away from the original group as one of them had a shortcut. The shortcut turned out to be a lie, and they were lost in the wild just as winter started setting in.

They were out of food, and with no wild game in sight, they settled in an abandoned church to wait out the winter. The other families were all older and larger than his family, which consisted of his parents, him, and his two little sisters.
