“Angelique?” I choke out the name of my dead sister, and her smile widens as she comes to a stop in front of me.

“Hello, little brother,” she purrs, then slips her arms around my waist while I am still suspended from the chains. “I have missed you.”

“How?! How are you still alive–!” she puts a finger to my lips and shakes her head.

“I had a tail on this one since they came into my town. Imagine my surprise when I was told that they had caught my little brother,” she tuts, then looks down at Alexander’s body and kicks it with her heel.

“Maybe one day I will explain why I severed our Threads, but for now you need to pay attention and listen,” she says, tapping against her ear.

I frown and strain my hearing… and my heart nearly leaps out of my chest when I hear gunfire and Valentine’s voice.

She smiles when she sees my expression, then places a chaste kiss on my cheek. “Your nest has come for you, and now it’s time for me to take my leave.”

“Wait! No, please don’t leave!” I beg, feeling hot tears cascade down my face when she steps away from me. “Please, Angelique, you’re the only family I have left!”

She offers me a sad look, then cups my face in her hands. “You’re wrong; the ones who have come for you, they’re your family now. I was never fit to lead, Gabriel –”

“Father is dead! You can’t just… why? Why would you sever our bond?!” I sob, not understanding why she would destroy something as sacred as a family bond. We were closer than any two siblings, only for her to do something like this?!

She sighs, shaking her head. “Father never wanted his eldest to be a woman, so I took myself out of the equation so as not to hinder your succession.”

“You’re wrong—”

“You know what I speak is the truth, dragul meu; you just need to think back and remember what father always said about me,” she says, then kisses my forehead and walks backward.

“You can’t leave… please don’t go…” I plead, not caring that I am groveling right now and hoping that my sister comes back to me.

“Don’t look for me or come back here; live your life, be happy, and know that I’ll always be watching you from the shadows.Te iubesc la infinit, Gabriel. Never forget that.”

And just like that, Angelique disappears from my life again and leaves me with an even bigger hole in my heart. How could she just decide to cut our ties and expect me to be happy with her decision?

I’ve lived my entire life thinking that I had been the cause of her death, only to find out she had been alive all this time.

The sound of the container door opening gets my attention and I look up to see Katherine walking in with Xenia behind her. They both look at the scene in front of them with wide eyes; me, still strung up in chains, while Alexander lay dead on the floor.

“What the fuck happened here?” Katherine exclaims and runs over to me. “Valentine! I need help!”

She comes to a stop in front of me and slowly pulls out the baobab arrows in my stomach. “Valentine-!”

“I’m here, fuck!” he calls and runs over to where we stood, snapping the steel chains from my wrists. He settles me on my feet and throws one of my arms over his neck. “We got you, Pres.”

“Guess that fucking tracking device came in handy,” I groan, feeling the poison coursing through my body from the arrows left behind. I can barely stand on my own two feet, but I shrug them off and turn to Katherine, wrapping my arms around her. “You came for me, little lamb.”

I can feel her smiling against my skin. “Always, King,” she says, letting go and cupping my face. “Let’s get out of here, hmm?”

Valentine takes up my left, while Katherine is on my right and when Church walks in, I gesture to the dead cunt laying on the floor. “Bring him along; he’s going to be in for a big surprise when he wakes up.” I chuckle, to the confusion of everyone.

“Isn’t he dead?” Xenia asks, kneeling beside him and holding two fingers to his neck. “Wait, puncture wounds?”

“Long fucking story; let's just say that he’ll be turning into the thing he hates the most right before he dies,” I say, listening to Katherine’s heartbeat racing at knowing that her father will be turning into one of us.

“How–”

“He can explain later,” Katherine snaps, an annoyed edge to her tone. “We need to remove these bullets and splinters before he dies. Church, grab my father and throw him in the trunk while Valentine and I walk Gabriel to the SUV,” she orders them and they actually fucking listen.

“Such a fucking Queen already,” I murmur, then cough so hard that I sputter black blood. “Ah, shit.”

Darkness takes me just as I hear Katherine call for Church.
