“Something like that—”

“WHY? Why would you do something like that, knowing how it would make me feel?!” she exclaims, shrugging my hands from her shoulders. “What if I lose you? What if I finally lose you this time?!”

I look into my Fated’s eyes laced thick with concern and listen to her erratic heartbeat before pulling her into my arms and kissing the side of her head. Fuck, I’ve made her worry for nothing, made her think I would willingly allow the council to kill me.

“You won’t lose me, little lamb; not now, not ever. The plans we’ve made for the council’s downfall are iron clad - no one will die except them. And as for being bait, Kazimir has wanted me dead for a long time; so finding out that I’m fraternizing with traitors is something he’d want to take care of himself. With the council watching, of course.” I assure her, but her heart is still beating as if she’s frightened.

I let go of the embrace and cupped her cheek with my hand while looking into her eyes.

“Katherine, I would never put myself in danger like this if I wasn’t 1000% sure our plan would work. There are a lot more aspects to this than simply putting myself in harm's way, aspects I want to discuss with you so you can have faith in this.”

“It’s not that I don’t have faith in you, not at all. Just knowing Kazimir will be heading here intending to kill you scares the shit out of me. I don’t want to lose you again, Gabriel-!”

“And you won't, my sweet girl. I promise, on my life, that you won’t ever lose me,” I say, sealing my vow with a kiss that makes her melt into my arms.

She runs her hands up inside my shirt and drags her nails down my back. “Fuck,” I groan, drawing my forehead to hers.

When I open my eyes, there’s a slight smile on her face and she sighs, laying her head on my chest.

“I love you, King,” she murmurs, calling me the nickname she once told me she would never utter, and it always has the ability to make my cock twitch.

“I love you too, little lamb,” I say, kissing her forehead and feeling happy that we’ve sorted this out. Now I can move on to my next phase… one I think Katherine will like.

“Now that everything is sorted out here, what do you say we go away for a day or two?”

Her head shoots up, and she narrows her eyes. “Go away? We just got back.”

I nod. “Yes, but we got back with baggage and things that needed to be arranged. Now I want to take you somewhere nice so you can forget about things for a little while.”

She smiles coyly and her cheeks turn rosy. “What do you have in mind?”

Not only will this involve Katherine being out of town when the council arrives, but it will guarantee her safety. I don’t want her anywhere near the estate when this happens, so I’ve had to come up with something to keep her and our unborn child out of harm's way.

I just hope that when she realizes what I’m planning, she will forgive me.

KATHERINE

Iwatch over the New York skyline and the realization hits me that I’ve never truly had a moment to just step back and appreciate something as simple as a sunset.

After years of living my life in survival mode, I’m always wondering if I should take this breather or if there’s something else to worry about.

But Gabriel promised no work or outside life for the next two days; just us spending some much-needed time together in an expensive hotel suite. The idiot, paranoid part of me thinks it’s something else, while the exhausted part of me is thankful for the break.

Gosh, I need to stop worrying so much.

Taking a deep breath, I mentally decide to shrug off the nasty feeling and enjoy my time with only Gabriel. It hasn’t just been us since he had me locked up back in Las Vegas, and somehow that seems like forever ago.

Speaking of the devil, he walks up behind me and slips his arms around my waist, and rests his chin on my shoulder.

“Deep in thought there, little lamb,” he says before placing a kiss on the nape of my neck. A delicious shiver shoots up my spine when his lips meet my skin and I lean my head back.

“Hmm, no. Not anymore,” I sigh as a happy smile sneaks onto my lips.

He chuckles and nips against my skin. “That’s what I want to hear,” he says before spinning me around and lacing our fingers together. “Come with me.”

I frown and it’s only when he walks me toward our bedroom that my heart flutters and catches in my throat.

Scattered red rose petals and a sweet fragrance lead our way, there are lit candles on every surface, casting a soft orange glow around the bedroom. He filled the large tub, standing right in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, to the brim with bubbles, and on the floor next to it was a silver ice bucket holding a bottle of what I assume is champagne or wine.
