That he’d thought so much about her needs made her feel valued, even loved, like never before. “I honestly don’t know at this moment.”

“That’s why I want you to do—what did you call it?—visualization. Think about where and what exactly you want to go down.” He licked his lips, and his gaze drifted down her body.

She swallowed, already visualizing one scenario that sent a wave of heat and desire through her.

“Once you decide, we’ll talk and come up with a signal for when you’re ready to try. No pressure.”

“That sounds like a well-thought-out plan.” And a way to avoid what happened when she’d gotten into potentially intimate situations after her divorce. “Are you this good at planning when it comes to your job?”

John flinched, and his jaw tightened. “I have to be.” His easy-going persona went MIA. “The places I go? There are always people who want to kill us. My life and the lives of my teammates depend on me anticipating all outcomes.”

She shuddered. “I see.”

“My new position will involve training. There are still risks, but I won’t deploy to dangerous places with enemies—at least for a while. I don’t want to bring the mood down, but we should address the elephant in the room. And I don’t mean Boss.”

“Your move?”

“Yeah.”

“Can we take this one step at a time? We’ve only been dating a week, and we should see if this is going to work before we have to figure out logistics. I don’t want potential complications to hold us back.”

“Okay. I like the way you phrased that.” Though slightly subdued, his smile returned. “I was kicking myself for even bringing that up now.”

“No, you were right to. Actually, you’d make a good counselor.”

“Me? A counselor?” He laughed. “Yeah, right.”

“I’m serious. Often, a counselor’s role is to challenge people to go to a place they aren’t comfortable going. Make the suggestion. If they aren’t ready, you don’t push. You work to develop trust and try again. Like you did with me.”

“Wren explained that after I came back from the wedding. I don’t think your clients would open up to me like they do you.”

“No, but with your combat experience, other vets would.”

“We do that in a bar or around a fire with a few beers. I don’t think that’ll work for you.”

“Probably not.” However, it was time to take one of those steps forward to see if she’d be able to conquer her past. “Are you ready to be my test subject?”

“Hell, yes,” he said, his voice low and sexy.

ChapterFifty-Five

DANGER ZONE – Kenny Loggins

As soon asJohn plopped down on the couch, Boss tried to climb up to join him. “No, Boss. You’re down there.” He pushed Boss back and pointed to the floor.

Boss turned his pleading gaze to Elizabeth.

“That’s my spot.” She patted Boss on the head, started the movie, and settled into place, immediately cognizant of John’s erection pressing into her.

“Ignore that. I’m a guy that’s gone without and you’re gorgeous, so I can’t control the effect you have on me.”

It was impossible to ignore, but she liked the effect she had on him. The contact made her feel empowered instead of fearful.

“I’m guessing you didn’t think about the songs in this movie when you picked it.”

“No. why?”

He cleared his throat. “You’ll see.” His fingertips tapped her outer thigh as the music transitioned to “Danger Zone.” As he sang the line about touch-and-go, his hand mimicked flying—into the danger zone as it hovered over her breast.
