“Lover”—her shoulders did a little dance—“sounds a little tawdry. Like we’re reducing the relationship to sex when it’s so much more. I wish there were a word that summarized an adult relationship with a person you love.”

Love. She’d said love. His hands gently squeezed her outer thighs. The sensation spreading through his body was indescribable. He could dodge any speeding bullet, fight off an entire enemy contingent, climb every mountain.

“Last night was—everything.” Her voice cracked, and her eyes went misty.

That was a lot to live up to. “Careful. You’re going to give me a big head.” Her cute chortle immediately told him how she took that with his erection poking her.

“I’m not just talking about your prowess in bed.”

“Did you use the word prowess because you knew I’d like it?” Her using it in reference to him satisfying her made him even harder. He snuck his hands under her shirt—his shirt—but semantics weren’t important when she wouldn’t be wearing it in a minute.

“Maybe. It’s your heart that made me fall for you. Well, I might have started falling the first time I saw you with Boss.”

“Really?”

“You two were pretty adorable at your reunion. Though I wasn’t ready for anything romantic then. But you wore me down and made me fake it until it was something I could handle. I feel like the me I used to be. Happy and more confident than I’ve ever been.” She lowered her face to his.

“Mmm. I like all those things. I’ll do my best to make sure you stay that way.”

“Um, do you think you could get Boss to go to his bed while we . . . ” She untied the drawstring of his sleep pants.

“Boss, you heard the lady. Go to your bed.”

Boss gave a plaintive whimper, raising his snout toward the bacon.

“Go to your bed.” John used his stern voice.

Boss hung his head and slunk away, casting a sad look at them before he disappeared from the kitchen.

“He’s breaking my heart, but I don’t think I can do this with him watching.”

That John encountered nothing but bare skin when he ran his hands up her outer thighs to her hips backed up his decision to temporarily disappoint his dog.

“You can give him the bacon when we eat. All will be forgiven, and everyone will be happy.”

ChapterFifty-Eight

AMERICAN SOLDIER – Toby Keith

When John openedElizabeth’s front door, Boss raced inside. John didn’t even knock—a sign of how quickly things had progressed the past two weeks. Was that all about to change? He headed to the kitchen on weighted legs. “Something sure smells great.”

“Dinner’s almost ready. You’re later than I thought.”

“Sorry about that. Colonel Holmstrom needed to see me.”

“Is everything okay?” she asked, a guardedness in her voice. Her eyes narrowed, taking him in.

“Not exactly. The captain for Charlie Company, who replaced my team, was injured yesterday.”

Her mouth formed a silentO. She didn’t ask, so he didn’t give her details that would only make her worry.

“They need someone to step in ASAP, as they’ve got a brand-new first lieutenant on his first deployment.”

“They want you to go?”

“Holmstrom asked. I don’t want to go right now, and I don’t have to . . .”

“But you’re being drafted for this mission?”
