“It was a good start,” Shelby said as they exited the elevator. She paused outside his door. “I’ll stop by after I change, and we can go back down together.”

“I didn’t pack swim trunks.”

“Shorts will be fine. Or we can get a drink and hang out poolside.”

“I want to call Elizabeth first.”

“Elizabeth?” Shelby broke the name into bite size portions, and her brows dipped.

“Yeah, she had too many clients scheduled to make it down for the rehearsal. I’ll introduce you to her tomorrow.”

“Oh.” Disappointment laced that lone word.

He tapped his key card to the lock and a green light flashed.

Shelby peeked in when he opened the door. “Looks like the wedding party got upgraded rooms. Are you the best man?”

“Ben won that honor.” John left his suitcase to block Shelby from entering while he hung the suit in the closet. “He’s known Nate the longest.” He’d also picked Cecilia over Diana for the final rose. Considering John’s track record with women, he’d done exceptionally well to pick the right final two, though he’d thought it would be Diana. “I’ll see you downstairs.”

Shelby backed out of the room. John kept his door from closing completely and listened until a door closed down the hall. When the coast was clear, he headed to the lobby.

He waited for the ginger-haired desk clerk who helped him earlier to finish with his current guest. “I tried to book a second room for tomorrow online, but you were full. I’m on a wait list. Can you check the status?”

“Once word got out that theSay Yes to the Rosecast was staying here, everything booked up.”

“Nothing? Not even a penthouse suite?”

“The studio booked all those when they reserved the block.”

“You’ll have cancelations tomorrow, right?” He’d promised Elizabeth her own room.

“Since you’re in the wedding party, I’ll put you at the top of the list, but the chances still aren’t good. I can reserve you a room in our sister hotel with complimentary shuttle service.”

“Yeah. Put that reservation in my name.” He’d stay here tonight and use that as a backup if he couldn’t get another room here tomorrow. Though he didn’t need Shelby showing up at his door—or Elizabeth’s, if he gave her his room. “I need to change to a different room.”

“Is there a problem?”

“You gave away my room number in front of someone I’d rather not know it.”

“I thought you were friends.”

“We are acquainted, but I need to keep it in the friend zone.”

“I understand. I am so sorry.” He tapped on the keyboard.

Maybe the vision of a drunk or tipsy Shelby knocking on his door wasn’t realistic, but there were too many ways that could blow up with a picture turning up on social media or in some tabloid.

The clerk frowned. “I don’t have another deluxe room available.”

“It doesn’t have to be deluxe.”

“The only thing I’ve got clean at the moment is a standard double.”

“I’ll take anything as long as it’s on a different floor.”

He handed John a new keycard. “We’ve got your number in the system to text if we get a cancelation.”

“Thanks. And can you make a note not to put calls through to my room?”
