He kept the kisses respectable, probably in case Megan and her husband were watching from somewhere in the parking lot.

“Since we’re officially dating now, we should probably make sure our stories are straight and get to know each other a little better,” Erin said as he navigated out of the parking lot.

“I say we leave out the part about the general planning to transfer me and start with the truth about meeting at the grill.”

“I’m good with that.”

On the short drive back to post, she asked him some basic getting-to-know-you questions. All too soon, he parked next to her car.

Graham glanced at Tommy unloading the USO van.

“When do I get to see you again?”

“When would you like to?” That seemed like a safe answer.

“Would tomorrow be too soon?”

“Not at all.”

“What are you up for? We’ve done Italian, Mexican, and Asian food.”

“Instead of going out, I bought some salmon earlier this week that I need to cook.”

“A homecooked meal and an evening with you sounds like a double win. If you don’t mind cooking at my place, it would set the stage for us dating.”

“I can do that.” The way he said it, dinner might not be the only thing on his mind. They’d just agreed to date. Was it too soon to be sleeping together? A needy part of her wanted to. Very much so.

She’d shave her legs tomorrow, just in case. Or should she get a Brazilian wax? She’d never gotten one since it hadn’t been a thing years ago. Now it seemed like a majority of the women did it. But at her age? It’s not like she could tactfully ask Graham if he expected that or would want her to. How bad did it hurt? Would she be too sensitive right afterward for intimacy? There was so much she didn’t know about dating and intimate relationships these days.

“I’ll text you my address. At some point, you’ll have to give me yours.”

“I told you I’m house and pet sitting. I don’t know how you feel about cats, and it’s not my place, but if you give me your address, I guess I can give you mine. After one more date,” she added, getting that sexy laugh she’d hoped to hear before kissing him good night. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” And maybe the next morning.

ChapterFourteen

When Erin’scar slowed and parked in front of his house, Graham turned off the vacuum and stored it in the closet. Years of military service had him trained to keep things orderly, but dusting baseboards had hardly been a priority since Bethann’s death. Not that he expected Erin to do a white glove test for dust. He wasn’t looking for a woman to cook and clean for him, but he wanted to make a good impression with her coming over.

By the time he got out the front door, his neighbor, Noelle Ayers, and her dog had intercepted Erin.

“Can I help you?” Noelle sounded like she was in interrogation mode.

“I’m here to have dinner with Graham.” Erin motioned to him as he strode down the front walk.

“You are?” Noelle’s posture stiffened.

“I’m Erin.” She shifted the cloth shopping bag and extended her hand. “And you are?”

“Noelle.” She didn’t take Erin’s hand. “My husband is Colonel Ayers.”

“Yes. With the 82ndAirborne. I saw you both at the homecoming a few weeks ago.”

“Can I help you with that?” Graham took the bag from Erin. “Hello, Noelle.”

“Thanks.” She smiled at him, then turned her attention back to Noelle. “She’s a cutie. Is she a Bichpoo?”

“Abigail’s aPoochon.”

“Hey, girl.” Erin stooped and extended her hand to the dog this time.
