“I know what it’s like to get your hopes up and nothing to come of it. I’d rather under-promise and over-deliver than be the reason she’s disappointed—especially about something this important.”

“You are one brilliant woman. And I’m feeling lucky that those other guys under-delivered on promises to help with your research, and you ended up inmysights.” He closed the distance between them.

Erin draped her arms over his shoulders and interlocked her fingers behind his neck. “And I got lucky that you never fail to under-deliver on your promises.” She pulled his face to hers.

The kisses got deeper and hotter, with her body pressing harder against his aroused one. “You didn’t bring an overnight bag?” he asked between kisses.

“Since Megan and Reece beat me here, I left it in the car.”

“Get it now or later?”

“Later.” She tugged his shirt upward, giving him that sexy smile that conveyed what she had in mind.

“Here?” He smiled down at her. She nodded, smiling even bigger when he lifted her to the counter.

ChapterTwenty-Six

“Hey, sweetheart,”Graham answered his daughter’s call.

“We wanted to see if you were home and it was okay to stop by,” Megan said.

“Of course, it’s fine.” Though it was unusual for his daughter to request permission versus dropping in.

“Is Erin there?”

“She should be here anytime.” His guard went up higher.

“I’ll see you soon.” She ended the call before he could ask if everything was okay.

Erin arrived first.

“You look extremely nice.” He admired her in a skirt that showed off her slender legs and a purple top that flattered her figure. “Megan is going to stop by any time now. She didn’t say why, but I’m hoping she’s got an update about contacting the doctor at Duke.”

“Will you run this upstairs while I put away the groceries?” She handed him her overnight bag.

“Sure, but I don’t have a problem with my kids knowing we spend the nights together. If you want to leave some things here, I’ve got empty drawers upstairs.” He’d been keeping his Go Bag in the car, but he wouldn’t mind leaving a uniform and change of clothes at her place either.

“I’ll think about it.”

She didn’t commit, but he gave her a kiss to think about too.

A few minutes later, Megan rapped on the door. She waited for him to open it rather than walk in as she’d typically done in the past.

He couldn’t decipher her expression, but she extended a bouquet of yellow, pink, purple, and white flowers to Erin. “These are for you.”

“You didn’t need to do that.” Erin accepted the bouquet.

“I wasn’t as welcoming as I should have been last weekend.”

“You had a lot on your mind.”

“They’re also a thank you for reaching out to your friend with a connection at Duke.”

“Did you find out anything?” Graham couldn’t wait to ask.

“I spoke with Dr. Verner’s assistant yesterday. He sent me a detailed family history form to complete. I sent them my medical records today, but can you get Mom’s records so I can send those as well?”

“Sure. I’ll log in and access them or have them released to you or his office.”
