“The woman I’m seeing is writing scripts for a series she pitched as being an Army version ofTop Gun: Maverickwith a female lead.”

“Is that why you tried to line up training flights with a Black Hawk last week?”

“Guilty. Think you can at least get her in a simulator?”

“That’s easy enough.” Lundy agreed as he teed up his ball.

Erin was going to love that. Conversation halted as they took turns teeing off. As usual, Lundy outdrove them all. As they headed down the fairway, he contemplated Noelle’s motive in bringing his love life up to the Mahinises. He couldn’t think of any reason for Noelle to talk about him and Erin to people, but if gossiping about them to the McKittricks helped him keep his command, maybe he would invite the Ayers to dinner.

“That’s Madison,”Erin said as her phone played “Under the Sea” while Graham drove them to meet the Mahinises at DiLorenzo’s for dinner Saturday evening.

“Hey, sweetheart. How’s everything?”

“If my boss doesn’t ease up, I will change roles or quit. I told him about needing time off for Mackinnley’s shower and wedding back in March. Except my co-worker is on vacation the whole week before the shower, and he won’t even let me take Friday off.”

“I’m sure Mackinnley will understand, especially since it’s a long way to come from Texas for the shower.”

“If I’d bought a plane ticket, I’d quit or call in sick and let him flounder.”

“No, you wouldn’t. At least without another job lined up,” Connor piped in from the background as the calming influence and voice of reason to counter Madison’s impulsive nature.

“You can communicate your needs to your boss and work out a better work situation or look at making a change rather than stay in a job that’s making you miserable.” Like Erin had done staying in her marriage.

“I may start looking. But I wanted to let you know about the shower since you’re helping with it.”

“I wish you could come. Maybe I can come to Texas sometime between now and October.” She glanced at Graham.

“That might work better since you don’t have a jerk boss dictating your schedule and can come whenever.”

“I have a few things on my calendar.” A helicopter roared overhead.

“I couldn’t hear you. Where are you?”

“We’re near the airfield. Graham and I are on our way to dinner with one of his golfing buddies and his wife.”

“Who is Graham?”

“The colonel who set it up for me to observe the Green Beret team.”

“Hello, Madison,” he said.

Silence engulfed the car.

“And the colonel we’re having dinner with is over an elite unit. Graham hasn’t said which, so I’m presuming it’s Delta.”

“Which I will neither confirm nor deny.” He winked at Erin.

“Oh, so this is research. Cool. Don’t let her do anything crazy, like jump out of a Black Hawk helicopter.

“We’re still negotiating that. I’m getting her time in a simulator.”

“You are? I am? When?” This was the first Erin had heard of this.

“I let Lundy beat me in golf again, then I asked for you.”

“Stick with the simulator. That’s safe. She will probably ask you a hundred questions and hit you up to attend some team or family event. You’ve been warned. Have fun. Bye.”
