“I’m not ready to go to sleep.” She lowered her forehead to his. “But bed is sounding good. I missed you.”

“Not as much as I missed you.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“I don’t want our first fight to be over who missed who more. Why don’t we concede to a draw where we both win.” He gripped her hips and kissed her in a way that made her weak in the knees.

This was the kind of win she needed to banish all her tension.

ChapterThirty-Two

“Doyou need me to drive? Erin asked as Graham put the overnight bags in the trunk of his car.

“I’m fine,” he said, despite the fact they’d both had trouble sleeping after Megan called last night with the news her surgery had been moved up.

He had offered to make a hotel reservation for Megan and Reece so they could hit the road to be there for the early morning procedure. Before he called them back with the hotel information, he’d asked Erin if she would go to the hospital with him today. She was touched that he’d want her there but insisted he ask Megan and Reece if that was all right first. That they also wanted her to come made it a no-brainer to go with him.

The traffic was light on the early morning drive to Durham. After finding a place to park at the hospital, he texted Reece to find out where to meet him.

Reece pushed to his feet when they joined him in the waiting room. He shook Graham’s hand and hugged Erin. “They just took her back to prep her for surgery ten minutes ago. The nurse said the procedure should last around an hour and a half. Two hours max.”

“How’s she doing?” Graham asked.

“A little anxious, but she’s ready to get this over with. When they called to say a patient had canceled, she immediately took the slot.” Reece sounded remarkably calm for a man whose wife was about to have brain surgery, but Erin figured it came from years of training to keep calm in every situation.

They took seats together in the waiting room where several other families huddled, awaiting news of their loved ones.

“Here, I brought something to distract you.” Erin handed Graham her bound script. “It’s the next episode.”

“What about me?” Reece asked.

“If you want to read the first episode, I’ve made some changes based on Graham’s suggestions. I haven’t printed it but have the file on my tablet. You can make notes in the file or on a pad of paper.”

“I’d love to read it.”

“Okay. Now is the time to fix anything before I send it to Ian out in LA, so be honest,” she stressed, opening the document and handing him her tablet. “With both of you reading my scripts, I’m going to walk around for a bit so I’m not staring at both of your expressions trying to gauge what you think. I’ve also got a scene I need to figure out. Let me know if you guys want me to bring you coffee or anything.”

“I could go for a coffee,” Graham said.

Reece also gave Erin his coffee order.

She exited the hospital, went to the Duke Gardens, and walked the trail around the fishpond. A few minutes into her walk, inspiration struck. She dictated a note into her phone to run her idea past Graham when she returned. She walked for another twenty minutes fleshing out the scene before returning and picking up three coffees.

“There you are.” Reece got up and headed toward her.

“Is everything okay?” She shouldn’t have been gone so long.

“You tell me. What happens to Travis?” Reece gestured to the tablet.

“You’re already finished?”

“Yes, and he won’t let me start reading the next episode yet.” He waved a hand toward Graham, still reading his paper copy.

That Reece was desperate to know what happened to her fictional character sent a rush of energy through her. She handed the men their coffees with hands that shook noticeably. “I can’t tell you until I know what you think of the story.”

“I don’t normally watch shows or movies about the military.ThisI would. I started making notes on a couple of terms we would use until I realized you had to make it understandable for civilians.”

Erin did an internal squeal. “Exactly. Believe it or not, not everyone even knows that in military terms a klick is a kilometer or that ‘got your six’ means I’ve got your back.” She turned to Graham. “And what about the second episode?”
