“I’m calling so we can meet like you asked.”

She hadn’t expected this. The timing wasn’t great, but she wouldn’t risk Madison changing her mind. “Hang on. Graham just went inside.” She went in through the side door. A glass of iced tea sat on the kitchen table, but he was nowhere in sight. “Graham?”

“Be out in a sec,” he called.

Erin sat at the table to wait for him to get out of the bathroom.

“What should I say to him?” Madison asked. “I can’t exactly start with ‘I’ve heard so much about you.’”

While it was tempting to let her wade through the awkwardness, Erin didn’t want to do that to Graham, who also had no time to prep. “Maybe you can thank him for helping with my research or ask about—”

“What were you saying, hun?” Graham came up behind her.

Erin angled just as Graham leaned in and kissed her neck.

“What the hell, Mom? Is he naked?” Madison shrieked.

Erin slammed the phone face down on the table.

Graham reared back.

“I’m talking to Madison.”

“I thought that wasn’t happening today.”

“She changed her mind and called to meet you.”

“Video?” He pronounced each syllable as a question, his eyes so wide she saw the whites all the way around.

She nodded. He wasn’t naked, but he was shirtless, had shed his shorts, and only wore a pair of boxer briefs.

“I’m sorry. Let me grab my shirt.” He ducked back into the laundry room.

Erin picked up the phone, uncertain if Madison had stayed on the line or hung up on her. “Sorry, he didn’t know I was on the phone with you.”

“Clearly. So, are you two, what, sleeping together?”

“We have been dating for a while now.”

“Yeah, but . . .”

“But what? I’m old?”

“Yes. And you’re my mother.”

“I’m not some shriveled-up crone.”

“Mother! I don’t want to hear about your sex life.”

“I wasn’t planning to tell you.”

“Tell me what?” Graham was back, his face still beet red.

“Hang on.” Erin took out the earbuds and put her phone on speaker. “Let’s try this again. Madison, this is Graham.”

“Hello.” His voice warbled a fraction. “I’m sorry about that. I was putting my sweaty clothes in the laundry before we—I—went up to shower.” He caught himself too late, taking things from bad to wickedly awkward.

“We should do this another time,” Madison said.
