Maybe I wouldn’t mind a study group with her. But just her. Why did she tolerate all the others?

The others were busy teasing Moirus and Tatiana.

“Come on, tell us! Three years is ages to be together when you’re young.” Jenny giggled.

“I’ve never had a relationship that lasted more than three months,” Numina volunteered.

“You just need to find a guy who’s into fire and brimstone.” Ezric grinned lasciviously, causing Numina to fling a fry at him.

“Our anniversary’s going to be a surprise. For both of us,” Moirus said firmly. Tatiana turned to him and he flushed. “I… sort of paid a witch to erase my memory. But I left myself a clue, so I know we’ll figure it out together next week.”

“A surprise for both of us?” Tatiana’s face shone, and she leaned forward to kiss Moirus.

It looked so… comfortable.

Like it was something she did every morning and evening, and any time she felt like it in between.

Like it was something she knew she’d be doing for the rest of her life.

It seemed sort of… nice.

And I found myself longing to have the same. With Amadeus.

No nonsense, Seta. Remember?I gave myself a mental shake and turned my head back to my paper.

“Hey.” Deus appeared at the head of the table, dropping his bag.

His warm glow enveloped the table, and I instantly felt better. Jenny started to scoot out of the booth.

“What are you doing?” said Ezric.

“Letting them sit together.” Jenny shot him a ‘duh’ look and motioned for him to do the same. “What does it look like I’m doing?”

Ezric shot me a scathing look. “No offense, Red, but I’m not moving.”

An awkward silence fell over the table.

Then Deus smiled. “Don’t worry about it. Thanks, Jen. Just sit back down and I’ll sit on the end.”

They squeezed in and I pressed myself tighter against the window.

“Sorry I’m late. Cannata ran us right up to the bell, and then Marita stopped to ask me about setting up for the fall festival next week— What’s so funny?” The table had burst out laughing.

“Told you he did this,” Jenny said, directing the comment toward me.

“So now that we’re all here, maybe you can tell us how you two met.” Silvia was looking between Deus and me, her eyes twinkling.

My cheeks heated up again. “Can’t we just focus on the alchemy test?”

They laughed again… everyone except Bianca, who shot me a sympathetic look. I could definitely see myself meeting up with her to study.

“We met right outside the mansion,” Deus grinned. “Seta had just pulled up. She looked lost, so I went over to help her.”

I rolled my eyes. He’d made me sound like a damsel in distress. Before I could correct him, Tatiana jumped in.

“Oh my gods, that’s just how Moirus and I met! At boarding school.” Her eyes shone as she laid her head on his shoulder. “I’d transferred, and I had no idea where everything was. That was the first time I’d been to a fully paranormal school before… and then Moirus came up to me. And said, ‘I’ll take care of you.’ And he has, ever since.”

Moirus’ hand slid around her shoulder and squeezed. “And I always will.”
