“A kraken?” he guessed. “Or is there another squid-like shifter I don’t know about?”

When he ran his finger down another tentacle, I found it hard to concentrate.

“N-no,” I stuttered. “I’m a kraken.”

“That makes a lot of sense.” His legs loosened slightly from around my waist.

“Does it?” Had I really been so bad at concealing myself?

Deus laughed. “Seta, you forget all the classic mermaid customs. You never go swimming, you never hang out with other mermaids… you don’t evenknowany of the other mermaids. Most of them seem to have some kind of connection with each other.”

He’d paid attention to things I hadn’t thought others would notice. I didn’t know what to say.

“My shoes are really heavy.” Deus shifted. “And probably ruined.”

“Kick them off. Your pants, too. You’ll feel less constrained, and I can grab them later,” I offered.

Deus raised one eyebrow. “Trying to get me naked? Do you have nefarious plans, my kraken princess?”

His fingers ghosted over my tentacles again, and he grinned wickedly at the full body tremor he caused.

Two could play that game.

I tugged on his belt until it came free and used the tips of my legs to pull his pants off. The feathered ends of my tentacle brushed over the inside of his thighs and he sucked in a harsh breath.

Using a second tentacle, I toyed with the elastic waistband of his boxers. When another spark of lightning streaked through his eyes, I came to my senses. I was playing with fire—or more accurately, lightning.

“Maybe we should go ashore,” I said. “I’ll help you swim there. Your first lesson.”

“Seta.” His voice was throaty.

With a bit of trepidation, he released his hold on me and moved his hands to the top of my shirt.

Deus undid the top button. “I’m kind of into this. I mean, if you are?”

Oh, I was definitely into it.

There was something about the heat of his body being pressed against my sensitive tentacles, while the cool salty water rocked against me, that was making it hard to think clearly. My body craved him with a need stronger than even my need for water.

Mine.

Deus wasn’t disgusted by my body, or horrified to be touched by my exploring tentacles. He hadn’t run terrified into the night when he realized he was in the water with the paranormal world’s monster.

With effort, I forced myself to think with my brain and not my vagina. “Deus, are you sure you won’t electrocute everything if we—?”

He paused in his mission to unbutton my shirt. His legs were tangled with my tentacles, and I was enjoying exploring his muscled thighs. Our eyes met, and behind that intense blue, I saw the remnants of his fear.

“When I went under, it was all I could think about. That I was going to go off and zap you and everything else in the lake. I was so busy concentrating on it I couldn’t think of anything else.” He swallowed, and leaned forward until his forehead was on mine, his nose pressed to my cheek. “I was reminded that the lightning answers to me, not the other way around. I want to keep going, if you want to.”

How in control are you?I wanted to ask, but when his hand slid between my thighs, I couldn’t speak. My hips bucked, even as I tried to untangle my thoughts.

It didn’t help that my tentacles had a life of their own. They’d dipped into his boxers, trembling with the desire to explore his body.

“Will you tell me?” My voice was ragged. Speaking took too much work. “If you have to… I can take you to shore…”

“I’ll tell you.” He pressed a kiss to my lips.

“Deus? Can I touch you?” I bit my lip, worried about his reaction. “With my tentacles?”
