To my surprise, Sutton simply replies with an "okay," and the blush extends down her neck. I hand her my phone, asking her to input her number and trying to avert my gaze from her now rosy chest.

I can't help but steal a glance at Sutton, who seems entirely engrossed in entering her number into my phone. She appears genuinely pleased that I want to be her friend, and that makes me feel like a bit of a jerk, yet again. She probably doesn't have many friends apart from Leia.

Then, it hits me—she's friends with Liam too.

Wait, she shouldn't have other guy friends. Just me, Liam, and Ronan, maybe. Ronan might be pushing it.

But looking at her, I can't help but smile, despite my best efforts to remain neutral. Ronan catches my eye, and he cringes. What's the deal? Is it so unusual for me to smile at him? Maybe I should clarify that I don't smile at just anyone, not women, not men, and not children.

As I decide to avoid looking at Sutton any longer, she hands my phone back, and our fingers graze. I drop my phone, that's how taken aback I am by the touch. Not good. Need to avoid.

Ronan decides to speak again, and this time, it doesn't mortify me. "All right, we're going to leave you, ladies, to it, and we'll be seeing you very soon." He smiles at each of the girls before getting up.

It's probably a good idea to wrap this up sooner rather than later; that way, I'll have fewer chances to say something inadvertently rude. I look at Sutton and find myself utterly speechless. I've officially lost my composure.

I manage to say, "Bye."

Her smile grows, and this one feels more genuine. "Bye."

Damn, she's beautiful.

Ronan grabs my arm and pulls me away. I break eye contact with Sutton and turn to glare at my so-called best friend. I can't wait to give him a piece of my mind. "What the hell was that?"

He gives me a puzzled look. "I was just trying to help, you idiot."

"I didn't need your help.

I can't believe this conversation isn't going the way he said it would.

He grins at me, his eyes twinkling. "Sutton's cute."

I playfully punch him in the shoulder. "Don't look at her."

Now he's positively beaming, the corner of his mouth curled up. He shifts the car into gear and smoothly pulls out of the parking lot.

"I wouldn't dream of it, though we might have a problem."

My curiosity piqued, I ask, "What problem?"

He glances at me, his expression a mix of amusement and faux concern. "A cute little brunette is trying to steal my best friend."

He's delusional as hell.

God, I really should avoid this.

I keep reminding myself that I'm only entertaining this for Ronan's sake, right?

CHAPTERNINE

SUTTON

I wavemy hands in the air, desperately hoping that Liam notices me before the other students start questioning my sanity. Today, I found myself in a different seat than my usual one because I arrived a little later than usual, and a group of girls had already claimed our usual spots. Now, I'm trapped in one of the back rows, which I absolutely despise.

I cast my gaze around the room, searching for Liam. A thrill courses through me when I spot him scanning the crowd, his eyes finally locking onto mine. A radiant smile illuminates his charming face as he weaves his way through the sea of people and chairs, eventually reaching the seat next to me. He plops down with a contented sigh.

"Hey! Why are you sitting back here?" he asks, his warm voice cutting through the chatter.

"Hi," I greet him, gesturing toward the group of girls who've claimed our regular seats. "The line at the coffee shop was moving at a snail's pace for some reason, and they beat me to it."
