"You play dirty," I whisper, playfully squeezing her side, causing her to jump.

She scowls at me before retaliating, digging her finger into my ribs. "I'd never win if I didn't."

That feels strange. I gently take her smaller hand in mine, pulling it away from my side. It's sweet that she wants to pay, but I can't shake the feeling that she's only doing it out of some sense of obligation for interrupting my break, even though that couldn't be further from the truth.

"You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but where do you get your money from?"

"Ah, um, my brother."

"I figured it was something like that."

"Yeah," she says, casting a quick glance at Ronan, who's entirely absorbed in his phone. "He deposits money in my account every month. I was thinking about getting a job, but he wanted me to focus on school and have a memorable college experience."

"You deserve it," I tell her.

A crooked smile begins to curl across her face. "I don't know about that."

Once Ronan is done with his dessert and Sutton retrieves her card, we slide out of the booth and hurry through the cold to reach my truck. I'm craving for some alone time with Sutton, but it seems like I'll have to wait a little longer.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

SUTTON

"Come here,"Lincoln says.

I comply, shuffling my body until I'm nestled in his arms, resting my head on his chest.

"Thanks for coming to visit me. I'm excited for you to meet my parents when they get home."

I nuzzle closer, a small smile playing on my lips. "It's been fun, even if Ronan's been our third wheel," I mumble, my face buried in the spot between his shoulder and neck. "I'm nervous about meeting your parents."

"They're going to love you. I have no doubt."

I can't help but wonder why his parents would feel that way. Our unique friendship began in such an unconventional manner; even I can't always make sense of it.

I raise my head, my gaze meeting his. "I hope so."

He smiles, his eyes warm and reassuring. "I know so. Everyone loves you."

I let out a soft, teasing laugh. "Liar, liar."

"I would never lie to you."

With gentle determination, Lincoln rolls me onto my back, settling between my spread legs. He leans down, his nose brushing softly against mine, the touch unhurried and intimate, as though he's savoring the simple pleasure of our togetherness.

I long for his kiss, desire simmering within me. And as if he can pluck my thoughts from the air, Lincoln's lips descend to mine. The kiss is a revelation, a firestorm of longing I never knew he harbored.

It's indescribable. It's more. It's exactly what I've convinced myself I deserve.

A growing urgency courses through me. I feel the undeniable pressure of his hardness pressing against my core. I ache for him, to have him inside me.

His lips reluctantly part from mine, and he inhales a ragged breath. "You're my girlfriend," he declares, almost breathless.

Stunned and dazed, I manage to respond, "Am I?"

He smiles, a tender affection in his eyes. "Yes, sweetheart. You're my perfect girl. I can't imagine my life without you."

I'm overwhelmed by the magnitude of what's happening. "Oh my god."
