Maybe we really could be just friends. That’s what tonight felt like. Just two friends talking and hanging out.

I like this side of Nick.

There isn’t any pressure or sexual tension. Some of the weight I’ve been carrying on my shoulders to do whatever I can to avoid him lifts. I don’t have to avoid him anymore.

I walk into my house to find Hannah on the couch reading. It’s not a game night, which would usually put her with her friend at the hockey house flirting with the team.

I have to talk to her. I can’t let whatever she saw and heard get back to Cora. Not after the dinner we just had and her death stares thrown in my direction. I don’t want to die before my senior year, thank you.

Hannah beats me to it. As soon as she sees me, she jumps up.

“Hey, Lenny. Can we talk for a minute?” She eagerly sits up as if she’s been waiting for me.

Although we’re sisters in our sorority, we barely talk. I don’t think we’ve said more than ten words to each other at one time.

“I was at the hockey house” She begins, not waiting for my response. “And well, Cora was going around saying stuff about Nick.”

“It’s all lies!” I groan before I can stop myself.

“Oh, I know!” She exclaims.

I stop to look at her.

How does she know? Did she and Nick—?

“I don’t know from experience.” She reassures me. “We kinda all figured it out. Don’t worry, we’re sisters! I’d never try anything with him.”

She backs down, scared.

Shit, I’m giving her my own death stare.

“I’m done with going there anyway.” She brushes her hair back from her face. “After everything Cora was saying this weekend, I don’t want to deal with that. I just wanted to let you know the stuff she was saying, and that I never told anyone about you and Nick.”

I let out a huge sigh of relief.

“Thank you,” I say sincerely.

At least that’s one crisis averted.

“I actually think it’s really cute that you two are together.” Hannah shrugs before heading up to her room. “You two make a really cute couple.”

“Oh. We’re just friends!” I call out to her before she makes it up the stairs.

“Yeah, ok. Friends don’t kiss like that.” She giggles before disappearing up to the third floor.

I groan with a plop on the couch.

Friends really don’t kiss like the way Nick kisses me.

But that’s done. No more kissing.

Just friends.

Just the way I want it.
