Nick was right. I did feel better after drinking that water.

Class and work flew by and I stopped being so jumpy.

Alex:Should I bring my hockey gear just in case? Mom says no.

Alex:Never mind. I’ll just bring a few things. Can’t wait to see you sis!

Me:I don’t think you’ll need your gear. We are going to a game and doing a free skate on Saturday night. Nothing major. This visit is to tour the campus.

Me:Can’t wait to see you either, bro!

Alex:Ugh! I can hear the way you say bro. Please be cooler since we’ll be in your school.

I send him an eye roll emoji and end the conversation there. There’s no need to fight right before he gets here, and I know he’s mostly just kidding.

Mostly. He’s always pointing out how much of a dork I am.

There’s also a message from Nick, and I can’t help the smile that forms on my lips.

Nick:Hey! You didn’t tell me your brother is a hockey player. I got you guys some good seats for tomorrow night. I helped Greg pick them out. They’ll be under your name at will call. It’s better than the student section. There’s one for Layla and Bridget if she wants to come too.

He didn’t have to do that. The student seats are way up high. I tried to get the press seats, but Dustin took them. The players get family seats that are super close, and I bet those are the seats they got.

Me:Thank you, but you didn’t have to do that. We would be fine in the student section.

Nick:I wanted to, and you’re welcome.

Me:I’m just really nervous having my brother here as it is. I don’t know why. I guess I think my family just sees me as one way, and it’s not like that for me here at all. Does that make sense?

Nick:Not really.

Nick:What are you doing now?

Me:Walking home from work.

Nick:Meet me in the quad.

It’s not even a question, but if Nick Miller says to meet him in the quad, you meet him in the quad. He doesn’t need to ask.

It’s dark and quiet. Most of the classes are done, and there’s only a few lampposts on the pathway.

The sound of footsteps running up comes from behind me and before I can turn to look, I’m lifted off the ground and carried to the middle of the open field.

Instinct kicks in and I’m flailing around kicking and punching before I hear the familiar deep rumble of a laugh.

“Nick! Put me down!” I yell trying to recover myself.

He sets me down and plops himself down on the grass next to me, still chuckling at my frightened hysterics.

“Not funny!” I go to playfully slap his arm, but he’s too quick.

He pulls me down to sit next to him on the cold grass.

“You really shouldn’t be out walking this late.” He shakes his head. “What if it wasn’t me? All that flailing around did nothing.”

“I walk home all the time! And I knew it was you.” I roll my eyes at him.

Please. This campus is completely safe. I grew up in Brooklyn. Some parts I would definitely not walk around by myself there, but even the nicer areas are worse than here.
