Bench me now, Coach!

“Oh, well I was thinking of one of my friends,” she says with a shrug. “I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“Well, that’s even better!” I shout with a little too much excitement.

She doesn’t have a boyfriend. I can turn this around. As long as I ignore the tightness in my chest.

Be cool, Nick.

“The guys are girl crazy right now, so if you could bring all the girls you can think of that would be great.” I add with a wink.

Real fucking smooth. Now, I sound like a creep looking for her to bring her friends for me to hook up with.

She laughs an awkward chuckle.

I missed that laugh.

It’s sweet and innocent… Real.

What is wrong with me?

I don’t do this. I don’t think a girl's laugh is cute.

“Ok well, I’ll think about it.” She sips on her smoothie and looks at me, expectantly.

Ask for her number. Get her number.

“Oh, just in case.” I point to her phone and take it without asking and send a text to my number. “That’s my number and now I have yours.”

Ok, my cool factor is back in check. I can still be smooth.

“Oh, and don’t think about it. Just come.” I add before rejoining Greg, leaving her there, stunned.

“Who was that?” Greg questions me, looking towards Lenny.

“No one, just a friend.” I say nonchalantly, helping him lift the weights over his chest.

“Yeah, ok.” He groans out from the sudden heavy weight, teasing me.

Greg can think whatever he wants to think. I just laid out my plan to have Lenny one more night to get my juices flowing right before the season starts.

I really want Lenny to go to our party. I want Lenny in my bed. I can’t stop thinking about her, but I have to. She’s a distraction. I can’t have that.

All I want is to feel that passion and desire inside her again.

I just want something real.

One more time couldn’t hurt.

One more night and then Lenny will be out of my head.

Easy.

Then my focus can shift right back to hockey.

After classes Thursday, Cora finds me.

We have a class together and sit at opposite ends of the lecture hall, but she waited outside the doors for me. I have an urge to ignore her. For some reason, it feels wrong. I know what she wants. I should want it too, but it feels wrong.
