“Alex?” I ask, realizing I recognize the voice.

The light switches on and there is Alex staring down at me. If looks could kill, I’d be shot dead right on this floor.

I stand quickly, not wanting to be in a vulnerable position. The kid may only be seventeen, but he’s just as big as me, slightly taller even. Standing over six feet tall, and I know how much he works out and bench presses from our discussion about training.

“What are you doing here?” He asks at the same time I ask, “Where’s Lenny?”

“She’s downstairs on the couch because she insisted I sleep in her room.” Alex crosses his arms over his chest.

I take a deep breath trying to calm my racing heart.

“Well thank god it’s you, for a second I thought I was going to have to kick some guy’s ass for being in your sister's bed.” I joke hoping to ease our tension.

Alex stands with his arms over his chest, not amused at all.

“Like what I’m going to have to do to some guy who’s sneaking into my sister's bed?”Shit.“I get your Nick Miller, but Lenny is my sister. Do you do this often?”

“No. No, not at all. First time, I swear.” At least it’s the first time I consciously snuck into her bed without her knowing. The actual first time Bridget tricked me. He doesn’t need to know that. “I just need to talk to her, that’s it.”

Alex checks the clock behind me.

“You snuck into my sister's room at midnight, just to talk?” He’s not buying it.

“Yup,” I say with absolutely no conviction. What the fuck was I thinking? “You’re right, I should just go now.”

“No, you came to talk. So, we’re going to talk. Sit down.” He commands with the same authority my dad has when I’m caught doing stupid shit.

Instinctively, I sit on the bed and Alex sits across from me in Lenny’s desk chair.

“This really isn’t necess—” I start trying to gain the upper hand, but Alex interrupts me with his first question.

“What are your intentions with my sister?”

“My what?” I’m completely caught off guard.

I wasn’t expecting this.

“Your intentions. Is she just an easy lay for you? A fuck buddy? Girlfriend?” The kid is serious. He has yet to uncross his arms, completely intimidating me.

It’s fucking working.

I shift on the bed uncomfortably.

“We like to think of it as benefits with a side of friendship.” I’m joking, but he’s not laughing.

Nervously, I clear my throat. I need to be honest with Alex if he’s going to trust me with his sister.

“I’m sorry. I’ll be completely honest with you.” I clear my throat again. It’s so dry, I now understand the expression of having a frog stuck in your throat. My words are croaking out, and I could really use a glass of water. “We started out just as hooking up, but I liked talking to her. She’s fun, and smart, and we get along great. So, we became friends.”

Alex nods following me.

“And now?” He asks when I don’t continue right away. “You hardly even looked at her today, but Friday and Saturday you were practically eye fucking each other.”

I let out a deep sigh.

“I really fucking like her. I tried to tell her last night, but I messed it up.” Talking to Alex is easier than I thought, it must run in the family. “She kept talking about us being just friends, and pushing me away. I lost it. I thought not being friends or anything with her would be better, but it’s been twenty-four hours and I already hate it.”

I take my hat off and run my hand through my hair. It’s become a nervous tick.
