“For what?”

“You haven’t heard from Cora in a while, right?” She asks as if she had something to do with it.

I nod. Not since our dining hall run-in.

“I set her up with a guy on the ski team.” She tells us. “I heard she was into that kinky shit with whips and stuff.”

I smirk and shrug when Luca and Holt’s eyes widen at me. I haven’t told any of the guys about that.

“Yeah, I thought so. He is too. So, voila! She’s not threatening us anymore, and she’s off your back. You’re welcome. Oh! I should be a matchmaker! That worked out so well.” Kandi’s too engrossed in her phone to notice the tension in the kitchen. “I gotta head out. Delta Nu business. It’s been a pleasure, boys.”

She smacks Holt’s jutted-out ass as she walks out to the front door. Luca grumbles a cough before heading out the back.

I didn’t think Luca was still mad at Holt for the stick slap, but he’s upset about something. I have bigger things to worry about.

That’s Holt, who still hasn’t taken his eyes off me.

The ice in my hand is already warm.

I turn and throw it in the freezer.

“How bad?” Holt asks.

I know he’s not talking about my date. He wants to know how bad my injury is.

“I’m just sore. It’ll be fine.” It hasn’t hurt this bad since before the surgery.

I honestly don’t know how bad it is.

My fist slams on the fridge door.

“Don’t be stupid. Get it looked at tomorrow morning. The longer you ignore it, the worse it’ll get.” Holt lectures me. “They have good doctors here. My shoulder dislocated in high school, and every once in a while, it still happens, but since I started seeing the trainers here it’s not nearly as often. They have me on some holistic shit. The shit works.”

I listen but he doesn’t get it. A complete MCL tear is different from a dislocated shoulder. It’s going to hurt my draft position and my dad is already saying he told me so.

“I’m serious, go tomorrow,” Holt says before heading back down to his basement.

I know his meaning, if I don’t go tomorrow he’s not going to get off my case. He may even get our coach involved.

I can’t let that happen.

I should be the one to tell Coach. I don’t want to be put on the bench even if I’m healthy, because I didn’t take proper injury precautions.

The next morning I’m sitting in the waiting room after getting an MRI.

The pain isn’t as bad as last night after icing and bandaging it.

I can’t stop my leg from shaking anticipating what the news will be.

To get my mind off it, I text Lenny. She answers right away, setting my mind at ease even with a simple good morning.

The door opens and my heart stops, but it’s just one of the nurses walking out for a break.

Me:Tell me a story. Something funny.

Lenny:uh why?

Me:I’m waiting for something and I need a good distraction.
