“So, why do you want an interview so bad? You know I’d help out with your article bet or no bet.” He questions me as we get to the thirteenth hole.

“I want a real interview. Not a boyfriend one, but a professional one.” I shrug. I'm even doubting the differences. But it is different. “It’s different to me.”

“You mean one where we’re not naked?” Nick smirks and slowly looks me over as if he’s imagining me naked right now.

“Yes, and more hard hitting questions,” I say the last part quietly.

I definitely have a lot of questions. Questions I’m too afraid to even think about let alone ask.

Nick stops me from shooting and tips my chin up to look at him. “Lenny, you can ask me anything you want. I’ll always be honest with you.” He searches my face, most likely seeing the fear I can’t keep hidden. “Tell me what you want to know.”

I bite my lip feeling so unsure of myself. It’s not that I’m afraid to ask, I’m more afraid of what his answer will be.

“Take your turn.” He might as well have said“take your time”because that’s what he’s giving me. He’s giving me time to get the courage to speak and to collect my thoughts.

I hit the ball down the course, not even watching for where it goes.

“Why didn’t you go to the NHL when you were right out of high school?” I shoot him with my first question. “I’ve heard and read different reasons. What’s the real reason?”

“My dad.” Nick sighs. “He wants me to get my degree first. To be honest, he’d rather me not play hockey at all and become a lawyer like him.”

I wince at that. I could never picture Nick Miller as a lawyer or any desk job for that matter. He belongs out there on that ice. That’s where his heart and soul is.

“There were a lot of offers, but there were also a lot of fights. Between my dad and my granddad mostly. My mom would cut in when it got bad, but she tried to keep her opinion to herself. I wanted to play.” He confesses after taking his turn. “I wanted to play and take the biggest offer I could get. I was eighteen and greedy. I almost pulled theI’m an adultcard, but I hated disappointing my mom. My dad wouldn’t have talked to me if I didn’t come up with a compromise. The compromise being I go to the best hockey school, play in the NCAA, and get my degree. Once out I can do what I want. Which is, of course, to play hockey.”

He winks at me and picks both our balls out of the hole. We kept playing as he talked, but I didn’t count the strokes.

“And lucky for me I got to meet you. I guess it was the best decision in the long run, huh?” He teases and pinches my side making me jump and squirm before he pulls me in for a chaste kiss.

It’s short and not at all passionate, but it still takes my breath away. Everything he does makes my heart flip over, and I become more and more enamored with this man before me.

“What about after you graduate? Where do you think you'll end up?” I want to know more. Like, does he see me in his future? Am I in the picture he has for himself?

We have over a year together at least and we’ve only known each other for a little over two months, but I can’t picture my life without him.

I’ve always felt a pull to him. I’ve watched him since freshman year from afar, just admiring him. But now that I know him, I’m completely in love. It’s not just his talent. It’s not just the sex. It’s him. It’s his personality and everything that makes Nick Miller, just Nick.

“I don’t know yet.” Nick shrugs. “I still get interest from teams. My dad and granddad have been working together to keep them interested and to keep those offers coming after letting them know they have to wait for me to finish. I think I’ll just go with my gut when the time comes.”

We’re already up to the sixteenth hole. Neither one of us is paying much attention.

“What about you?” Nick nudges my shoulder. “What’s your plan after graduating?”

“Ha! Find a job. That’s my big plan.” It’s not nearly as exciting as Nick’s plan and I don’t have the options like he does. I just have to figure out how to keep my head up and keep trying to put myself out there. “I’m going to try to look for an internship next summer. Hopefully I can get in that way. Probably somewhere close to home.”

“Ever think about not having to work?” He looks down at his ball and speaks quietly. “What would you do if you didn’t need to worry about a job or money?”

I think it over for a minute, but I know I wouldn’t do anything else. I love to write about hockey and other sports too, but my passion is hockey.

“I’d still do the same thing. I’d still work, but I may just do it more on my terms rather than start out by doing coffee runs for a sportscaster.”

To get to the next hole we have to go under a fake rock bridge that has water coming down on one side. It’s dark and only the floor is lit. We’ve been holding hands and giving each other little touches here and there.

Nick squeezes my hand and quickly pulls to turn me around to face him.

“Lenny. I want you to come with me.” At first I don’t know what he’s talking about, but his hand cups my cheek while the other lightly caresses my back. “I know we have over a year until we graduate and I know we’ve only been going out for a few weeks.”

“Nick, we don’t — "
