“I can’t pull down with my small car. Sorry.” He shrugs telling me nicely to get my ass out of his car. I see him already pull his app up to accept another ride.

“Thanks,” I mutter and get out.

He peels away before I can even change my mind.

I’ll just drop off the manila envelope containing the article and get another Uber to a hotel for the night. That’s what I’ll do.

The driveway has been plowed, but there’s still a good amount of snow on it. Taking my first few steps and I slip, landing on the soft pile of snow along the side.

Fuck. This day couldn’t get any worse.

My leggings are soaked through and my thin winter coat is pushed up, making the snow go up into my shirt.

I’m freezing and I’m wet, but I trek on.

The house is big and lit up with colorful Christmas lights all around it. There’s a screened porch around the front. I have no idea if I should knock on the porch door or go into the main door.

That feels like breaking in and I’m already a borderline stalker so I stay outside and knock on the screen.

I wait a minute and try again.

Oh well.

This is better. I can just leave the envelope inside the porch and run out of here.

Just as I’m placing it down on the floor, the front door to the house opens.

“Can I help you?”

I look up to see Nick’s mom, with an apron and towel looking down at me.

“Hi.” I shift nervously and hand her the envelope. “This is for Nick.”

She looks at me like I have two heads.

“I just wanted to drop this off for him, and I can go on my way.”

“You're not a process server, are you?” She takes the envelope and immediately opens it.

“No!” I shout, stopping her from opening the letter. “I, uh. A what?” I have no idea what she’s talking about.

“What’s in here?” She peers into the envelope and reads the cover page. Her eyes widen before she looks up at me.

“It’s just a letter. I should go.” I back away and almost wipe out on the icy steps.

Nick’s mom holds me up and stops me from falling down. Once I’m able to stand again she starts brushing off the snow that’s still caked onto my leggings.

“Oh. Thank you.” I blush as she swats at my behind to get the snow off.

“Are you Lenny?” She asks after she’s satisfied with her snow removal.

“Oh! Um, yes?” I don’t know why I say it as a question, but I’m really nervous and start fidgeting my hands together as she looks me up and down.

Once I answer, she smiles brightly at me, the same grin Nick has and the same gray-blue eyes.

“Come inside, dear.” She opens the door for me to go, but I stand frozen still in my spot.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” I shake my head imagining walking in to see an angry Nick glaring at me and calling me a stalker.
