“Where are you going?” Nick’s voice comes from right behind me just as I open the door to leave.

He stares at me and pinches his arm, before shaking his head.

“I, um, I didn’t get your message until after I landed. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have come here.” I toss the envelope with my article in it from where his mom left it on the table, trying not to get too close. “Here. I just came to give you that.”

“You flew all the way to Minnesota to give me—” He looks inside it. “An article you wrote?”

His eyebrows raise, questioning me.

“Yeah, well it seemed like a good idea. But I can see I was wrong. I have to get back. My Uber is calling me, and I need to make my flight.”

Nick walks to the chair I was just sitting in and pulls out my phone from the cushion.

“Your phone is over here.” He holds it out for me to take.

I go to grab it, but he holds on, not letting me take it from him.

“I didn’t ask why you were here. I’m asking why you are leaving?” He steps back and sits on the edge of the table, still holding my phone, and dragging me with him.

“Because you broke up with me.” I croak out.

“No, I didn’t break up with you.” He shakes his head vehemently.

“In your voicemail—” I start to explain, but Nick grabs my phone out of my hand and finds the voicemail in question.

“Did you listen to the whole thing?” He replays it on my speaker between us. “By the way, I won Pretty Pretty Princess. The second time. I think they let me win so they could take pictures of me wearing a crown.”

He grins and then frowns when the voicemail ends.

“It got cut off.”

With a groan, he puts my phone on the table next to him.

I reach out to get it, but he holds my waist steady.

“Lenny, I’m not breaking up with you.” His hands rub up and down my hips and he grimaces. “You're cold.”

“I didn’t—” I start, but he stops me again.

“I don’t care what happened.”

“I need to tell you. Jeremy–”

Nick squeezes my waist and pulls me closer to him. “Lenny, listen to me. I don’t care what happened. I trust you. Seeing that you came all the way here for me took away any doubt I had. I love you. I tried to tell you in the voicemail, but I took too long to say it.”

“But you—” I stop trying to argue with him and take in what he’s saying.

Nick holds out my arm in front of me, takes my other hand and squeezes the first.

“You’re real. I’m real. And you’re not a distraction.” His gray eyes pierce into me with so much fear, taking my breath away. “You’re my everything.”

I know why he’s scared, because I am too. I never thought I would feel this way about him. I thought I had the same infatuation and attraction every other girl that looks at him has. But it’s so much more.

Change is scary, but I would change everything to be with him.

“Nick.” I let out the breath I was holding in. “I love you.”

“I know.” He smirks at me.
