I bite my bottom lip after speaking my mind. I don’t want him to stop. It just came out. His hand on my hip grips me tight, digging his fingers into my skin.

He stills with his lips still brushing against my skin.

“We were never friends first.” He rises with a smirk to meet my eyes. “We’re benefits with a side of friendship.”

I roll my eyes at his corny description of our relationship. I don’t know if you can even say we have a relationship.

Maybe he is right.

Benefits with a side of friendship sounds better than Fuck Buddies.

“What if I am one of those so-called Puck Bunnies?” I utter solemnly, feeling like I’m not anything more to him anyway.

“No.” He licks his lips and stares down at my own. “You’re better than that.”

Running his thumb over my bottom lip, he leans down kissing me softly. It isn’t filled with desperation or urgency. It’s soft and slow. His kiss is sweet with just a small amount of tongue peeking out onto my lips. It’s one that’s meant to be remembered. It’s meant to ease all my doubts and feel more of the connection we have.

He pulls away looking almost embarrassed, leaving me breathless against the door.

“Do you want to leave first? Maybe make sure it’s clear for me. I didn’t think this through.” He scratches the back of his head. “I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

I nod, knowing he’s right. I can get fired if someone saw us coming out together. It wouldn’t look great for either one of us.

“Oh, and Lenny,” Nick stops me before I can open the door. “I will read the article. Fully read it, the first chance I get. But I know it’s probably the best article ever written about the team so far.”

I chew on my lips and turn away before he can see the red blush filling up my face.

As soon as the door opens, I run straight into Layla and slam the door behind me before Nick can come out.

“There you are! I saw Nick running after you. Was he being an ass?” She asks, with her hands on her hips looking down the hall as if she expects him to guiltily come out of the locker room.

I laugh, knowing he can hear our conversation.

“You read the article. Did you think it was bad?” I can’t help myself.

I want him to hear her thoughts on it. I want him to realize it’s not as bad as he thinks.

“Are you kidding? I loved it! Greg told me your little joke, could make some girls try to throw themselves more at Nick, or use it as a way to get into his pants. I don’t know. I mean, you kinda made Nick seem like a great person, especially the stuff about his grandfather. For sure, making everyone swoon.” She puts a hand on my shoulder. “Not your best idea, but it’s still a great article!”

She’s just making him seem right. Just a tad right, but still as if his concerns are sound.

“I have to get going, but keep Wednesday night open. We’re going to dinner and maybe do something fun after.” She turns to go to the locker room. “Oh, and you can let Nick out of the closet now.”

She winks and ducks out of the hallway.

Damn her.She knew he was there.

I open the door to let Nick out. He has a smug smile and I just wanted to slam the door back into his face.

“Don’t say it!” I hold up my hand to stop him.

I don’t need to hear how he’s right.

He keeps his mouth shut, but his smile says everything.

Maybe I didn’t completely think my words through. But it won’t be any different than what he’s already used to.
