I’m trying not to think about it, but the longer she’s missing, the smaller the chance that we’ll find her alive.

Fuck.

I can’t think like that.

I can’t lose her. I can’t lose anyone again. I won’t be able to take it. Willa deserves so much more than losing her life for a jerk that doesn’t love her and treats her like garbage.

We stop at the first cabin. A few faces I’ve seen around campus, but I don’t know them. They don’t even know who Willa is.

Carter had called in for a rescue right as we left. The most they’ll do is scan the roads until the storm passes and we’re thirty minutes ahead of them, at least.

The next cabin is the same.

And the next.

And the next.

The roads are completely empty. The storm isn’t stopping and still, no sign of Willa.

We’re getting close to where Vic’s cabin is and if she was using the navigation on her phone, this is the way she would’ve gone.

Carter knocks on the door of the next cabin, but there’s no answer. I pound on it louder. Frustrated, scared, and reaching my breaking point. Jocelyn keeps texting me that no one knows where Willa is. I told her to call everyone she knows that’s up here while we look.

Penny answers the door and covers herself with a robe, stepping back from the chill.

“What’s going on?” She asks, looking past us to the snow.

“No, Jocelyn. She hasn’t come here.” Kandace’s voice comes from inside. “Who’s out looking for her?”

I push past Penny as Carter asks if she has seen Willa.

“He’s out looking for her? How?” Kandace shrieks with her hand on her chest before moving it through her bright red messy hair.

It’s sticking out in every direction. Makeup is smeared over her face and her shirt is half tucked into her shorts and half out, but she’s still the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life. I don’t care about anything going on between us. I’m so happy to see her. She’s alive. She’s safe.

I haven’t lost her, and if I have her, I can make it through anything.

She looks up, hearing my heavy steps.

Tears pool at the corners of her eyes and I don’t waste a second to wrap my arms and lips around her. She clutches on to me, finding the only skin poking out of my heavy wet coat. At some point from the door to her, I threw my gloves off and I’m holding onto her to give me strength and courage I need to keep moving.

“I love you,” I tell her and tighten her body to mine. Clutching onto her for dear life.

I can’t lose them both. My heart can’t take any more loss.

“We have two more cabins on this road and then we can check the road on the way down,” Carter calls out from where I left him in the doorway.

“What?” Kandace clutches my coat when I go to move away. “You can’t go out there. Isn’t there police or someone looking for her?”

“I have to keep looking.” I wipe the tear that falls on her cheek.

She’s shaking, but I can’t stay no matter how much I want to. Kandace is safe. Willa isn’t. I know she’s out there and we’ll find her.

“I’ll be ok. I have to find her.” I hold Kandace’s hands in mine and give them a kiss before letting go.

She nods, not able to say anything.

I see it. In her bright green eyes, she loves me too. She’s scared and worried and I want to reassure her everything will be ok. But I can’t make that promise.
