“Well, you can go on a date with me tomorrow night?” He nervously laughs again.

It’s cute he’s asking me on a date. I clearly remember it being very quick. It happens. And then I kicked him out so I could spend the rest of the night in my room. I don’t even think I told him I was a Delta Nu.

“I’mreallybusy tomorrow night.” I try letting him down gently.

“Friday? Or any other night? I just had a skate tryout, so my schedule may get busy when we start training.”

This guy is serious. I thought for sure he’d switch gears and start asking to meet up for a quickie.

“Aren’t tryouts for freshmen?”Shit, did I ask that out loud?

“Yeah, I’m a freshman. I thought I told you that. It’s not a big deal, right?”The fuck it’s not!“You’re a sophomore, right? I don’t think you told me. Either way, it doesn’t bother me. Especially for a beautiful girl like you.”

You got to be kidding me! I’m better than this. How did I not know?

Freshmen are a big no. They get clingy, some are virgins, and they think they’re in love after one kiss.

How could I be so stupid? Of course, this guy is a freshman. It was so obvious and I was completely blindsided. This curse just keeps hitting me with bad fortune repeatedly.

“Kandi, are you still there?”

“Yup.” I say, popping out of my bed to try to think this through. “How did you get my number? This is a prank, right?”

My phone rings as Max tries to switch our call to a video. I answer it to make sure I’m not being pranked. I don’t even care that my hair is in a messy twisted bun on top of my head, and I have no makeup on. I’m wearing my glasses that I only wear around the house when I’m lounging around and I’m in my pajamas, but I need to know I’m not being messed with.

“Wow, you’re gorgeous,” he says as I answer.

Definitely a freshman. There’s a small amount of stubble on his chin, but other than that, he had a baby face.

“How old are you?” I have to make sure it’s legal. I know some pre-law students who I used to be friendly with that are ASA’s, the sorority down the block, and most of them are still here in law school.

He laughs. It’s throaty and deep. Exactly why I thought he was older.

“Eighteen and a half.”Thank god.

He’s sitting on his bed, shirtless, and tries to flex his little muscle behind his head. What did I get myself into?

“Look Max, it is Max right?” He nods. “It was fun, but I don’t do the whole dating thing.”

I get another throaty laugh. “Why not? What about we go for some coffee?”

Most guys would be upset and get defensive. To be honest, I haven’t had to turn down a date in a long time. They know who I am and what we are. A fun one-night stand, maybe a few more casual nights. But nothing serious. This is college!

I know what you’re thinking, but I have always been safe. Always use a condom, always take birth control, and always get a regular checkup. That and I avoid any funky smells. That includes hot beefy guys like Damon Rice, a hockey player who graduated a couple years back. I took one whiff and turned that skunk down. The next day, my friend, who stayed for the night, got a rash. Disgusting.

“You seem like a good guy, Max. I’m sure any girl here would love to go on a date with you.”

“Except you. Why is that?”

He’s cocky, and the seventeen-year-old me would’ve swooned. That is, before I entered the real dating world.

“Did Luca put you up to this?” Still not convinced this isn’t a prank. “Because if he did, he’s dead. And don’t think for one second you’ll get off free. I will take all of his accomplices down.”

“Whoa! It’s not a prank. I don’t know who Luca is.” He thinks it over. “The only Luca I can think of is,The Kingof this school, and I doubt he spends his time pranking beautiful girls.”

He definitely doesn’t know Luca, because that’s exactly what he’d be doing in his spare time.

“So, tell me about yourself, Kandi.”
