“Tell me, is she beautiful? Has she cast some spell over you?” Ulbrick waited.

Alzerion opened his mouth but thought better.

“I don’t get it.” Warren spoke first.

Ulbrick’s gaze darted at Warren. “I’m talking about the princess. I know that she’s back. I was waiting for Alzerion to admit it, but I guess he was trying to keep it a secret.” Ulbrick hissed. “Did you know about it, Warren?”

Warren gulped. Alzerion shook his head. Warren gulped. “I knew. I’m sorry.” He flinched away but nothing happened. Alzerion glared at the both of them.

Ulbrick smirked and then sat on one of the chairs with his hands folded. “I’m not mad. Disappointed but you came clean in the end, Warren. Now, Alzerion, I do believe you said I couldn’t do anything to change your mind. Well, I do believe that I have the upper hand.” Alzerion’s nostrils flared as this bitterness filled inside as he looked over at Warren, who mouthed, I’m sorry. Then he focused back on Ulbrick. “I really do hate you.”

“I know.” Ulbrick’s words had this coldness to them. “Is it your job to keep her safe, just like before?”

Alzerion glared but then nodded, firmly.

“Warren?”

“Yes,” he replied. He fixed his eyes right on Ulbrick.

“This will help us gain access to the princess. It has always been Alzerion’s job to protect her and now, well he will serve her head on a platter if we need.”

“Enough!” Alzerion thundered. “Warren you know I don’t want her harmed.” Alzerion pleaded, but Warren just looked down at the ground.

“Alzerion, you will do what we need.”

Alzerion’s face twisted into disgust. Then he frowned. “No. I-I can’t.” Alzerion’s voice wavered for a moment. “I could never harm her. When I agreed to help you, you promised no harm would come her way.”

Ulbrick sat with ease. Like nothing affected him. “Actually, I said that she was safe, for now. Well, now things are different. Now she matters. Now she is of age to cause trouble for my plans. Now she must be dealt with.”

Alzerion shuddered at the coldness but still held firm. “No! Never going to happen.”

Ulbrick rose. “Alzerion enough. We will fight. Go to the palace and prepare as the rebellion will strike within the month. There is nothing you can do to stop me!”

Alzerion glared. He was frustrated with both of them. Warren bowed his head toward Ulbrick. How could he always do as instructed? Does he have no soul, either of them?

Annoyance and anguish flooded his face. As his right hand circled above his head, he disappeared in a puff of red smoke and then appeared in an empty hallway at the palace. He slammed his boot into the ground as he turned trying to collect himself. How could he have been so blinded? He knew Ulbrick shouldn’t have been trusted, but he trusted Warren to have his back. Turns out old age wasn’t going to make Ulbrick soft, just desperate. Alzerion clutched at the half heart necklace and closed his eyes. He knew what he had to do.

AS THE BONDS GROW STRONGER

A

ironell laid in her bed wiping the last bit of sleep from her eyes. She was bombarded by a whirlwind of thoughts. It’s too early. She sat up, slowly, scanning her enormous room. This couldn’t be real, she thought. Then there was this chirping. A bird was perched on her window.

It had copper brown feathers, all slicked back, with a white underbelly that was flecked with black specks. It was stunning against the sunlit sky. The chirps were even more amazing. It sounded like a seasoned flutist, serenading her. She sat watching at it, grinning. It stopped abruptly and flew away.

“Wait, where are you going?”Wow. Did she really think that the bird would listen to her?She shook her head and started to pull off her blankets, but resisted when she heard laughing. There he was Alzerion. Standing there with that smirk. Like he was toying with her somehow as he stood with his arms folded across his chest as he leaned against the doorjamb.

Her eyes were glued on him but she steadied her breathing just enough to not seem exasperated. “What are you doing here?” She fiddled with the seam of the blanket that covered her.

Alzerion locked eyes with hers. She watched, carefully, as he bit his lower lip. She couldn’t help but think that they were inviting her in.Kissable. That is how she described them. Every time he laughed or smirked or just spoke it was like they were inviting her in; like magnets.

Alzerion strolled in until he was in front of her. “I just wanted to check on you. Seeing that you slept well.”Did he care about her? She wasn’t sure and she was not going to ask. She was practically melting inside the way his words oozed out. He always sounded charming and sure of himself. She swallowed.

“I am awake. I was watching the cutest little bird, but it left.” She craned her neck toward the window. There was a dip in the mattress and she felt this warmth wash over her hand, as it lay on her sheet. She turned back and there he was, inches, if that from her.

“Well, you know what they say, right?”

Not entirely sure of what he said she stared blankly and shook her head sideways. “Huh?”
