I shake the man’s hand.

“Have a seat,” she tells me.

I do as she says.

“I’m asking you to do something risky,” Flynn begins. “And my husband can’t know about it.”

“Okay.” I nod. I trust this woman, and more than anything, I know Skylar looks up to her like a mother.

“We’re going to need to expose all of Carter’s little situations of beating people up in a bar, but what would really top off this little situation was if you were his next target.”

I blink.

Did I hear her right?

She then goes on to tell me what I need to do.

“Are you in?” she asks.

“You know I am,” I confirm.

“Follow me,” Mike says, and I follow him into a little office. “Boss doesn’t need to know the gritty details.”

I stand quietly.

“I’ve done a lot of research on our guy. He doesn’t like you. He hates you. Hates that you are with Skylar. Things are going to have to get ugly. You need to play dirty if you want this to work.”

It’s like he’s talking in code.

I agree to everything and make it across town to the arena with five minutes to get on the ice.

I’m obviously going to be late. When I arrive on the ice, Myles nods to me. I nod back. I get the idea he knew I went to see Flynn, or maybe he thought I was delayed with the paternity test.

After practice, I’m called into his office.

“Sir, I’m going to need a family emergency day. I can’t make tomorrow’s game,” I say.

Myles’s lips pinch together. Flynn was very clear on what she wanted me to say to her husband. We need to keep Myles’s knowledge clear in case this goes south. I don’t want my coach implicated.

“Sure, is this about Skylar? I know Crew had to go for the paternity test today,” he says.

“It is about Skylar,” I admit.

“Okay, we’ll be resting you for the game in Philly,” he confirms.

“Thank you, sir.”

I leave his office and head home. I pack a bag and call Skylar.

“I’m heading out of town for the next couple of days. You can reach me on my cell if you need me,” I say. The less she knows, the better.

“I love you,” she replies, assuming I must be going out of town for games.

I close my eyes, squeezing them together. “I love you too.”

I head out to my Rover and place my bag in the back seat before I get into the car.

Then I drive out toward the freeway.
