We head home. “That could be our home,” I say excitedly.

Liam’s cell rings. “It’s Flynn.”

He answers.

“Hi, Flynn, I’ve got Skylar in the car with me.”

“Hi, Skylar,” she greets. “I have good news for both of you. . .”

Liam gives me a side glance. It could only be one thing. Butterflies flutter in my belly.

“The adoption came through. I’ll need you both in my office tomorrow. Call my secretary to set up a time. I’ll tell her to squeeze you in.”

“Thanks so much, Flynn,” I say.

“Thanks, Flynn,” Liam says, but when I look over at my man I see he is overcome with emotion.

We end the call.

“This is really happening,” he says.

“It is,” I agree. “When I was raising Crew on my own, it was the one thing I wished I could give him.”

“It’s happening, baby.” He kisses the back of my hand.

“I know and I just feel so blessed.”

“Me too,” Liam replies and then he’s touching buttons on his steering wheel and making calls.

His dad’s voice comes through the Bluetooth. “Hi, Son.”

“Hi, Dad. Just one sec. I need to add Mom to the call,” he says. Thanks to Liam, his parents are talking and even made amends.

Liam dials his mom and then tells her he’s connecting the call.

“Hi, guys,” he says to them. “I have Skylar with me, and we have news.”

He’s radiating with excitement.

His parents wait expectantly.

“The adoption came through,” Liam cheers.

His mom squeals and his dad cheers as they both congratulate us. And me? My heart bursts with love.

EPILOGUE

Liam

“I can’t believe I had to wait this long to marry you,” I say to Skylar as I carry her in my arms over the threshold of the villa we will be spending the night in, here in Napa Valley.

One night many months ago, Skylar said she dreamed of a fairy-tale wedding, but she always felt like it would be out of her reach, so I asked her what it looked like. Then I hired a wedding planner to make it happen. Sky chose Napa Valley at the end of June so the hockey season would be over, and we could focus just on us.

The ceremony occurred outdoors in a vineyard under baby-blue skies and warm sun with all our friends and family in attendance. At least those who counted were here. My parents walked me down the aisle, and Flynn and Myles walked Sky along with Crew, my best man.

After a beautiful afternoon of I dos and a lovely party to follow under a huge white tent with a live band and enough flowers to fill a small country, I finally have my wife all to myself.

“But it was so worth it,” Skylar says.
