“Feeling better?” I ask her.

She nods. “Much better. You saved me with the Advil.”

“Keep the bottle here so you have it for next time. I better get out of here. I didn’t want to leave you with an open window. I can’t get the screen back on from outside.”

“Thanks for staying. For being here for me,” she says.

She sits up, and I get off the bed. She stands, and I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Sweet dreams,” I tell her and I kiss her lips.

“Thanks.” She smiles.

I leave her room and head back to my house. It feels like I’ve gone from brightness into a dark hole. When I get to my bedroom, I look out the window, see her lamp on, and smile again.

CHAPTERFIVE

Liam

After a week of away games, we’re back in New York. I don’t have to be in for training until later this afternoon, so I decide to take a little drive. Only the little drive takes a lot longer than anticipated when I consider midday traffic in New York. By the time I make it to Brooklyn, I’m in a time crunch, but I have to see Skylar. She never responded to the little note I left her, and I haven’t been able to get her out of my head all week. It takes forever for me to find a parking spot, but I finally do in a lot about five minutes away from the diner. I make the walk over to the diner. It’s freezing outside, and snow has started to fall from the sky. I pull the diner door open, but before I do, I see a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk. Shit! He must be freezing out here.

“Hey.” I approach him. “Excuse me.”

He begins to move.

“It’s freezing out here,” I warn with my hands tucked into my jacket pocket as the cold wind causes me to shiver.

“What do you want me to do about it?” he asks, sounding angry.

“Why don’t you come with me, and I’ll buy you a meal in that diner over there,” I offer.

He watches me.

“What’s the catch?” He watches me warily.

“No catch,” I assure him. “Whatever you want off the menu is yours, and you can get some time inside and out of the cold.”

He agrees.

We walk inside.

A woman comes up to us, and she gives the homeless guy a look.

“We need a table for two,” I tell her.

She turns around to look at some man behind a cash register. He nods his head.

“Okay, come with me please,” she says.

I’m just hoping this guy doesn’t have any weapons on him and isn’t dangerous. I’m a big guy and I could take him, but I’d hate for that to happen.

We take a seat at a table, and I pass him the menu, then I consider he may not know how to read.

“What would you like to eat?” I ask him.

“Don’t know.” He shrugs. “Anything.”

While I’m looking at the menu in front of my face, the server comes up to the table. I don’t see her, but I know her voice. I can tell it’s Skylar.
