“He did good,” Wolfe tells me.

“Thanks so much,” I say.

“We’re going to head out, bro,” Wolfe tells Liam and gives him a fist bump.

Liam bumps him back.

Rebel walks back into the arena. “Good, you guys are done. I need to get this little munchkin into a crib before she gets used to me holding her all day.”

“It was really nice to meet you,” I say to her and her husband.

“You too, Skylar,” Rebel replies. “Hope to see you again soon.”

He looks over at Liam and some sort of understanding passes between them.

“Take care,” I say, and then I reach to get my son’s jacket on him.

“I’ll do it,” Crew says as he watches Wolfe’s son Liam put his jacket on himself.

“Okay.” I smile. He usually likes for me to help him, so I like he’s asking for independence.

With the kids all bundled, we head back to the parking garage to Liam’s car.

“That was fun. Thank you for taking us,” I say to Liam.

“It was my pleasure,” he responds. “But I hope our date isn’t over. I was hoping to take you guys out for lunch.”

“Lunch sounds good, but I think he may need to crash for a nap after he eats,” I explain.

“We can go somewhere kid friendly,” Liam suggests, surprising me.

“Thanks, Liam,” I say, and we begin to drive. I turn back to look at Crew because I think he’s going to doze off, but he’s kicking his feet up in the air and bouncing in his seat.

“So where did you learn so much about kids?”

Liam’s lips pinch together before he speaks. “I don’t know a lot about kids. I mean I’ve been around Wolfe’s little Liam when they invite me over for meals, but I don’t know much.”

I nod.

After a good twenty minutes, he pulls into the parking lot of Dave & Buster’s. It’s the perfect place for Crew to eat and run around. I look over at Liam, and all I can think is, damn him and his perfect blue eyes, his wide shoulders, his sculpted arms, and his warm heart. He isn’t giving me a fighting chance.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

Skylar

Over the following week, Liam called me every day as he traveled from city to city for games. We talked about his games, our favorite foods, and our guilty pleasures. He wanted me to say something dirty to that one, but I insisted it was chocolate, to which he responded fantasizing about me in his bed has become his. His voice turned husky, and a shot of warmth spiked between my thighs. I cleared my throat and asked him if he’d seen any good movies lately. I don’t think he appreciated me changing the direction of the conversation, but I felt like I was in over my head. There is a familiarity between us, but there is also the mystery of who he is today.

I’ve just put Crew to sleep when my phone vibrates, and Liam’s name lights up the screen.

“Hello,” I answer quietly.

“Hi,” he says. “We’re on the bus heading back to New York.”

“You must be exhausted,” I whisper.

“Not really, I’m used to all the travel by now,” he states. “How are you?”

“I’m perpetually exhausted.” I laugh, twirling a lock of hair.
