“So bring Crew. We can make it a pizza night. I have video games. We can watch a movie together,” I suggest. I’ll take anything she’s willing to give.

“Considering I can’t work all week that sounds nice,” she agrees, and the victory feels sweet.

We continue to eat. “You can spend the day with me. I’ll take you to pick up the little guy from kindergarten, and we can bring him back to my place and hang out.”

She looks in my eyes, and I don’t know what she’s searching for, but whatever she finds allows her to say yes.

“Good.” I smile. “Then it’s a date.”

“You’re really stuck on that word.” She laughs.

“Maybe I am. I’m all about making things official these days.” I grin mischievously as I suck noodles into my mouth.

Skylar watches me with a blank expression, and I wish I knew what she was thinking.

We finish eating. “You sit. I’ll clean the dishes,” I tell her. “Keep off your leg. The less pressure you put on it the faster your bones will heal.”

“Thanks, doc,” she jokes.

I turn and lean down. “If that’s your fantasy, I can be your doctor too,” I whisper against her ear. Then I lean in so our lips are so close they are almost touching. Her warm breaths touch my skin in small hot puffs. I lick my lips, wanting a taste, but I hold back. I can see she responds to me. Watching the pulse point in her neck gives her away. She wants me. I look down at her perfect chest heaving. My guess is she hasn’t had a man in a heck of a long time. She tilts her head up a little and I pull away. Something about space making the heart grow fonder and all.

After I wash the dishes, I say good night to Skylar and Patty.

Then I reach down and I pick Crew up. I give him an airplane ride around the apartment and he laughs hysterically, giggling away.

When I put him down, he asks me if I can do it again.

“I think Liam has had a long day, Crew. Let’s say good night,” Skylar says.

“We can do one more ride if your mom says it’s okay,” I say to Crew.

Crew gives his mom the sweetest most pleading look he can muster. Folding his hands together, he holds them up to Skylar. She doesn’t stand a chance with his cuteness. “Please, Mommy.”

“Okay,” she concedes.

I pick up Crew, holding him sideways, and twirl him around the room.

Crew is having a blast.

I put Crew down, and I’m out of breath.

“You just gave me a workout,” I joke to Crew, holding my hands on my waist and catching my breath.

“Can I come watch you play hockey?” Crew asks, looking up at me with a wide smile.

“We need to see if it would be okay with your mom,” I say carefully.

“Mommy please,” Crew begs.

“Okay, sweet boy. You need a shower and go to bed,” Skylar deflects.

I head to the door and get my boots on. Crew brings me my jacket.

“Thanks for dinner,” I say to Skylar.

“Thanks for coming to the hospital,” she replies.

We stand watching each other for a few beats. Then I break away.
