When it’s time to say goodbye, I kiss my son and tell him to be a good boy.

Then we thank Rebel for her hospitality and head out.

I drive back to Brooklyn, and Patty is right. I’m already feeling more confident.

“We need to go out tonight,” Patty suggests. “When was the last time you had a night off?”

“I just want to go to sleep,” I say, and then I yawn.

“Stop being an old lady,” Patty chides. “We’re going to drop the car at home and head out to a bar for drinks.” I can’t say no to her because we really don’t ever get to hang out this way.

We drop off the car and catch an Uber to a bar Patty frequents.

We get dropped off in front of Bistro 21. It looks small and posh, and when we head inside, it’s filled with all kinds of beautiful people. I’m wearing a pair of blue jeans with a burgundy long-sleeve bodysuit, which is fine. But most of these girls are dressed half naked. I do feel old.

We take a seat at the bar. A server comes up to us. “What can I get you, ladies,” he asks. He looks like he could be a model.

Patty looks over at me. “Tequila or vodka.”

“Neither.”

“It wasn’t a question. Make a choice,” she demands.

“Fine. Tequila.”

We get served and clink glasses. One shot turns into two. We joke around and laugh, and then I think I am about five shots in.

A guy comes up to Patty. She knows him. He blatantly asks her if she is up for some fun tonight.

She looks over at me for approval.

“Don’t let me stop your fun.” I grin.

“Okay, but I’m walking you outside and into an Uber,” she says.

I’m more than tipsy but this is fine.

She calls me an Uber, and I give her a hug and say bye.

When I get back to the apartment, it’s a challenge getting the key in the hole to open the door, but after about ten tries, I’m in.

I throw my jacket to the floor and kick off my booties.

Then I walk over to the couch. I don’t think I’ve ever spent a night alone here before.

I call Liam without checking the time. They played in Boston tonight.

I put him on speaker and rip off my sweater. “Dammit.”

“Hello, Skylar?”

“Oh hey,” I say.

I start to take off my jeans, but they are the skinny kind, and I lose my balance. “Shit.”

“Sky, are you okay? What’s going on?” Liam asks. His voice sounds groggy.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” I ask, and then I hiccup. “Oh no.”
