“That’s enough,” Wolfe says.

“Come.” Liam looks over at me. He takes me by the hand and walks away from Carter with Wolfe and Evan trailing us. I feel like I’m going to pass out.

“This isn’t over, Skylar. I want an answer,” Carter calls after us.

By the time I get back to the table, I can’t stand. My hands are clammy, and I feel like I’m going to faint.

“Are you okay, Sky?” Liam asks. I take a seat beside Patty.

“What happened? What’s wrong?” Patty asks.

“Carter’s here. He came face-to-face with Liam and me. He asked if I had his kid,” I reply.

Patty tsks. “Damn him.”

Wolfe and Evan take a seat at the table.

“I’m shaking like a leaf.”

“I’m sitting here at the table with you,” Liam says, and he asks one of the servers to bring him over a chair.

Flynn passes me a glass of water.

“Thanks,” I say, and I sip it slowly. “He asked if I had his child.”

She purses her lip.

“I should get a restraining order,” Flynn says.

“I didn’t answer him, but I know him. He won’t let this go, not after he saw me and Liam together. He was jealous. It was radiating off him. He’s crazy when it comes to Liam.”

“Sky, I’ll never let anything happen to you,” Liam assures.

“I don’t know how you stayed calm,” I say.

“I didn’t want to set off any alarm bells in his mind, that’s how. I have you and. . .” His voice trails off. “To worry about. Carter isn’t coming anywhere near you.”

I know he was about to say he has Crew to worry about too, and it warms my heart.

“I should be able to protect myself,” I say, rubbing my hands up and down my arms.

“Sky, you are strong and courageous. I didn’t need to save you from Carter, but I sure as hell will protect you. You’re my life,” Liam says, and he doesn’t shy away from the fact everyone around the table can hear him.

“I didn’t want to bring it up tonight,” Flynn cuts in. “My PI found some dirt on Carter. Whatever happens, we will make sure you and Crew are safe.” Her words ease my anxiety because a part of me wants to stand and tell Liam we can’t be together. That I can’t risk my son, but another part of me doesn’t want to give up on what I know is the greatest love of my life. I have an army supporting me. I try to convince myself I need to stay. That I’ve spent too much time living in solitude. In fear.

“Thank you.” I sigh.

“It’s nothing,” Flynn assures. “I would want to kick his sorry ass out of here, but speeches are about to begin. I don’t want to take away from the importance of the night, and I don’t think Carter is dumb enough to lose his shit here.”

I blink. Liam takes my hand in his. It feels so good having all these people standing behind me. I’m kind of terrified about Carter asking about Crew, but I’m also relieved to have such amazing people in my corner.

“It’s going to be okay.” Patty rubs my shoulder. She knows my worst fear is sharing custody with Carter. He can’t be trusted. He could hurt Crew just to spite me.

Myles goes to the front of the room to give a speech.

Liam leans into my ear. “We could leave if you want.”

“I want to stay to support them,” I answer.
