“And here she is,” the doctor says, and he takes our baby and holds her up.

“Wait a minute, she?” I ask, looking between the doctor and my wife. “I thought you said you looked at the results?”

Patty falls back on the bed and the doctor lays the baby on Patty’s chest.

“Would you like to cut the umbilical cord, Daddy?” the doctor asks.

“I said I looked at the sonogram picture, not the results. I thought I saw a penis,” Patty explains.

“You definitely have a daughter, Mr. Hayworth,” the nurse chimes.

And it hits me, right in the center of my chest, this overwhelming feeling of love but also dread because if she looks anything like her mother, I’m going to have to keep a bat by the door to shoo all the boys away.

“My daughter,” I repeat, and tears sting my eyes.

“Oh, Patty,” Flynn says, and she is full-on crying as she snaps pictures of all of us, including me in my overemotional state.

I lean over and kiss my wife. “You did amazing.”

“No, Evan, we did amazing,” she replies.

And just like that I have my own little family. To read more about Patty’s parents and Aunt Sloane and Uncle Oli check out the Big Stick series.

PROLOGUE

“Hey,come on, you need to wake up,” the voice says sounding startled. “Come on please you need to leave.”

I’m slowly pulled from sleep to feel someone shaking me. My eyes slowly open and I see Meagan my coworker pleading with me to get up.

I rub my eyes. “What’s going on?”

“You need to go, now,” she shouts.

“What? Would you chill?” I look at the watch on my wrist. “It’s five in the morning.”

“Sorry but I only allowed you to stay here because my roommate was away. She called to say she just landed at the airport,” Meagan says looking alarmed. She should be alarmed. I paid her three hundred dollars for this room this month and it’s only been two weeks.

“What about the money I gave you?” I ask.

“Look I can find a way to give it back to you, but I need you gone now. If Annie finds out you were sleeping in here she’s going to be pissed. I needed the money but. . .”

Just great.

I didn’t exactly unpack my clothes but my art supplies are all over the place.

“I hope you didn’t stain anything with all this paint,” she complains. “I’ll have to check for damages before I refund you the remainder of your rent.”

This is what I get for trusting a coworker I barely know. I didn’t have the money to keep paying for my apartment. I moved out without giving notice and thought I hit the jackpot when Meagan my manager at the retail store said she had an empty room in her apartment that would be available for the next few months. Luckily, I told her I’d pay as I go because it’s been two weeks and this is falling apart.
