I wave and walk away. I’ve never been away on my own before, but I need this time. I’ve been go-go-go since high school. It will be nice to have time for me.

I get on the plane, hopeful for a new adventure. I arrive to London. I gave myself a few days of downtime here to acclimate to the time change, but after two days on my own, I’m bored and need someone to talk to. I persevere because this trip is also about me getting to know myself better. I’ve spent the last years of my life focusing on school, the residency, and raising Crew with Skylar since she is a single mom, who needed my help. However, I’m pushing thirty in a couple of years, and I don’t know who I am or what I want. This trip is supposed to hold the answers for me. Right now, I’m just so bored that I begin to think maybe it wasn’t the best idea to take this endeavor on my own. I reassure myself things will start to look up once I’m working with children in the hospitals, but who knows.

CHAPTERFOUR

Evan

I hate the Florida heat. Kaleb focuses as he sets his position and swings the club back, he hits the ball out to the green.

“Fuck, is there something this kid isn’t good at?” Brett asks. He’s joking. . .kind of. Kaleb happens to be good at everything he tries, and Brett still hasn’t gotten the swing of playing golf after all these years.

The four of us are decked out in golf attire under the scorching Florida sun as we drink frozen spiked lemonade. I’d personally prefer the beach where I can chill in the shade or cool off in the ocean during my off time, but I know the guys like to golf. Funny enough, we aren’t the only hockey players here. We just bumped into a bunch of players from Seattle and Canada. Usually, Liam took this trip with us but he’s busy with Skylar, so he skipped on us this year. We invited Matt along instead. He’s one of our wingers.

“You’re up,” Matt says to me.

I go up to tee.

“At least try acting like you’re having fun,” Matt chuckles.

“Fuck you. I hate this heat,” I grumble.

“So why did you come? You could’ve stayed back at the hotel?” Brett questions.

“And have you guys complain to me all evening. I don’t think so,” I reply dryly.

A waitress comes around and fills our food cart with more snacks and drinks. Brett eyes her like she’s a snack. She smiles back. We each got our separate rooms so we could hook up, only I’m not in the mood for a random hookup.

I keep thinking of a leggy blonde who is completely off-limits. There is something about Patty that’s drawing me in. She’s obviously beautiful, she’s funny, confident. But that’s not all. I like her personality. She’s a little prickly, she’s clear about the boundaries she’s set between us, but I think she’s made a mistake. We have the potential to be great friends.

I don’t pay attention when I swing my club and the ball doesn’t get far.

The guys laugh.

“We need to get you laid,” Brett declares to me. “I think you’re still in a funk.”

“What would make you say that?” I answer sarcastically.

“That waitress was fucking hot. You should’ve been eye-fucking her like the rest of us,” he explains.

“That isn’t my style,” I retort.

“Oh, okay, pretty boy. You get the chicks coming to you without paying them any attention, I forgot,” Brett says.

“What can I say?” I joke, even though it’s kind of true.

“You need to get your dick wet,” Matt says.

“What do you know about my dick?” I ask him because I’m pretty sure he wasn’t around when I told the guys about Evie screwing me over.

“I know about the old dude, Evan. You need to be having lots of sex with lots of hot chicks to wipe that shit from your memory,” Matt responds.

Fucking great. Now everyone knows I’ve been played.

“Damn.” I squeeze my eyes shut and the visual of Evie returns. “I was trying to forget about it. You talking about it just brings it to the forefront of my mind, you idiot.”

“Hence why you need to get laid,” Brett says, bobbing his head. “Tell him, Kaleb.”

“You need to get laid,” Kaleb deadpans.
