She got a lot of new furniture when she moved in. The place is warm and inviting. It has the kind of female touch my place just doesn’t have.

“Thanks for understanding. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. It’s just a lot more demanding than I realized it would be. Come in.” She waves me in, and we head over to the couch.

“How are you settling in?” I ask.

“The place is really nice. I can’t complain. It’s just, I don’t know, it’s quiet. I got used to living with Skylar and Crew for so many years. There was always something going on. Our place was busy, and I loved it. Now I’m met with a whole bunch of nothingness.”

“In other words, you feel lonely. I kind of feel the same way,” I confess, as we take a seat next to each other on the couch.

“Yeah, I guess. In that sense I’m happy to be busy with work.”

“I hear you. The guys and I get together a lot for meals and to play video games for that very reason.”

“Makes sense. Most of my friends are still in Brooklyn. This place is convenient for work but not so much my social life,” she admits, and I take in her scent. She smells sweet and I try to stay focused.

“Nah, don’t say that. You’ve got me next door.” I give her my megawatt smile.

“I’m grateful for that. I’d lose my mind if I didn’t,” she says.

I rub my shoulder into hers. “Right back at you, friend.” I feel like that’s what I need, a reminder that she and I can only ever be friends.

“Are you hungry? I was going to order in.”

“I can always eat,” I state.

“Good,” she replies. “Would the vegan grill work for you? Or do you want meat?”

“Agg, you really want the healthy stuff?” I whine.

“If you don’t mind,” she says, scrunching her nose. She is so adorable.

“Sure, get whatever,” I reply because how can I say no to this beautiful woman.

Patty orders us some burgers with vegetables and home fries.

She explains the buns on the burgers are gluten free and so delicious.

I’m skeptical but I keep it to myself.

“We are getting dessert,” I insist.

“No, the burgers and buns are already a splurge.”

“I agreed to eat your plant food, but we need dessert,” I demand.

“Fine,” she play huffs and adds a warm brownie and blueberry vegan cheesecake to the order. She ends the call and gives me her attention. “Anything new?”

“Not really.” I shrug. “Do we need to talk about the family drama that went down at your parents’ place on Thanksgiving?” I ask. Because although I was here when she moved in, we haven’t had a minute alone. I wasn’t going to bring it up in front of the other guys.

“That was pretty intense,” she agrees. “Aunt Sloane and Uncle Oli are just worried about Hunter. He’s a good guy.”

“And he got himself into a pickle.”

“He did,” she agrees. “About the wedding. . .”

“What?” I ask.

“Would you mind coming as my date? I mean, like I don’t want to go by myself and I’m not dating anyone, so I thought it would make sense to bring a friend,” she clarifies but she’s stuttering. Patty doesn’t stutter. She is usually the epitome of confident and assured.
