I run my fingers through my hair and head over to the door. When I open it, Evan’s breath hitches.

“Shit, you look stunning.”

“You say it like it’s a bad thing,” I laugh.

He adjusts the neck on his dress shirt. “It’s not a bad thing.”

“You look good too. And you smell good,” I say, leaning in and taking a whiff of him. It may be a little weird, but I figure we are close enough to divulge these things to each other.

“You like the way I smell?” he asks, as if that’s a weird thing to say.

“Yes,” I reply. I grab my clutch and slip the lipstick inside.

“Your lips look sinful,” he observes, and then he adjusts his crotch. I’m not sure what is happening, but I thank him for the compliment and return it.

“Your shoulders look really good in that shirt,” I counter because the way the shirt hugs his shoulders is sexy AF.

“Yeah, you like my shoulders?” he asks.

“You know you have good shoulders,” I say and since we are on a roll I add, “And you have beautiful eyes.”

“Don’t even get me started on your eyes, Patty,” he scolds as we enter the elevator. I don’t know what we are doing, but all this talk is making me wet and it’s getting warm in the damn elevator.

When we stop on the fifth floor, my parents get on the elevator. “Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad,” I greet them, my tone a little squeaky.

“Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders. You’re both looking good,” Evan says to them.

Okay so he is just in a complimentary mood and that had nothing to do with me.

“You kids look great too,” Mom replies and then she eyes Daddy.

“Thank you,” Evan says. He’s standing a couple of feet away from me so it’s not like we were doing anything wrong.

We all get off the elevator together and Mom guides us to where the rehearsal dinner is. Quinn tried unsuccessfully to get the guest list for tonight from her mom. I don’t know if Andrew will be here.

Mom and Dad walk into the room hand in hand and Evan and I follow behind with a good foot between us. Kevin is already here and comes up to me and Mom and kisses us when he sees us.

Uncle Oli comes over and introduces us to Amy. She gushes over meeting Evan and Kevin.

“I’ve never met so many professional hockey players in my life at one time,” she singsongs. Aunt Sloane takes a large gulp of her wine and with Amy’s words she spits it back into the glass.

Mom eyes her and I know she is saying to keep her cool.

Evan and Kevin politely greet Amy but neither of them shakes her hand or hugs her, which I feel would’ve happened if Amy was behaving normally.

Hunter comes over and the guys hug and congratulate him. He seems to be on cloud nine and none of us want to burst his bubble.

The guys go to the bar to have a drink with Hunter, and I stay behind with Mom, who wants to comfort Aunt Sloane.

“This is a mess, but Hunter is in love,” Aunt Sloane cries.

“We need to support him. If we say anything is off with Amy; he will just lash out at us,” Mom advises.

She does have a point.

“I’m going to try and find Quinn. Things have a way of working out though. Let’s have some faith,” I say to Aunt Sloane.

“Thanks, honey,” she replies. “And you look beautiful. Evan seems to be a really nice guy.”
