“But not yet because I want to learn about the team,” she counters.

“I’m on board with that,” I assure. “You know I support your choices, no matter what. What’s important to you is important to me.” I know that’s a difficult statement but what I learned is that loving Ellie and supporting her dreams makes me feel better. I may not be interested in her art but I love her, and that’s all that matters.

She pulls from my embrace.

“Where are you going?” I ask, shocked because she is moving fast. She grabs a robe and wraps it around herself and then she shoots out of the room.

I must be missing something.

She returns a moment later holding a canvas. She turns it around and my jaw drops.

“Ellie.”

She’s been going to Jersey every day to follow corporate around. Since it’s offseason there isn’t much going on except for behind-the-scenes stuff.

“That is amazing,” I say. She’s painted the arena.

“I’m thinking when the players are back, I could paint them too,” she says with excitement.

I fall silent.

“Say something.” She waits, holding the canvas in front of her.

“You never cease to amaze me.” I smile.

“You’re the one who inspired me. There is so much emotion involved in playing hockey. I want to capture that emotion, the rush, the downs, the ups,” she says.

“This is very cool, Ellie.”

She shrugs. “It feels good.”

I nod. “I can see a lot of fans loving on artwork like this.”

“It’s not about the money,” she retorts.

“I know, but still, it’s super cool. The detail, the colors, I’ve never seen anything like it. I love it,” I finally say.

“I love you, Connor. So much. My heart just feels so full,” she says, and I know that means a lot coming from her. After meeting her family, I was flabbergasted that such a warm, caring woman came from such heartless people.

“I love you more, Ellie. Now get back to bed. I’m exhausted and we have a pool party to attend tomorrow.” She places the picture on the dresser.

She climbs into bed and I take her in my arms. I breathe in the scent of her hair. My heart is full too, and I take a deep breath, glad I put my fears aside and allowed myself to have this life with her.

PROLOGUE

Kaleb

I pop a bite size cake into my mouth and groan. This sweet table is out of this world. The team has the day off today for Connor and Ellie’s wedding. Tomorrow is the big game. The final of the season. It’s crunch time yet I am allowing myself this guilty pleasure since my good friend just got hitched.

Damn that’s good. I lick my fingers when I hear a giggle come from behind me.
