“I need you to swing both my legs off the bed gently, keeping them close together. Then I need to use you so I can get myself up,” he says. I do as he says and place his legs on the floor. I can tell he’s in pain. He places some pressure on my shoulders.

“I hope I’m not hurting you,” he groans. I take him in. His fresh scent, his muscular body. Hot damn, it should be a sin to look that good.

“I’m good. I’m a lot stronger than I look,” I assure awkwardly. Having him this close is messing with my head.

I pass him his crutches and even though he grunts as he makes his way to the restroom, he gets inside and locks the door.

“How about you and I read a book?” I ask Syd.

She nods. We leave Connor to his business. Instead of going to Syd’s room, she takes a book off a bookcase in the main room and then takes me to my room.

“You want to read the book in my room?” I ask.

She nods.

“Okay, let me grab an extra chair,” I say to her, figuring we can sit at the little desk in my room.

She shakes her head and runs to the bed. Then she jumps on it.

“Okay, I get it.” I take a seat on the bed and pat the spot next to me. We read a story calledMiss Daisy is Crazy. Syd loves the story, and her laughs radiate through the room.

After the story, she runs out of the room. “One second. Come back here,” I call.

She stops and looks at me.

“I’d like to show you how to hang your bag when you come home. It’s not good to leave it on the floor,” I explain.

I don’t know if it’s my job to teach her. What I do know is that I had nannies doing every little thing for me growing up and it makes a person useless. There was a lot I had to learn about life and getting by once I left home.

She comes to me and picks up her backpack and places it on the hook in the front closet.

“Thank you.” I smile.

She pinches her mouth shut and then points toward Connor’s room.

“Go ahead,” I say to her. I should check to see if he needs help getting back into bed.

When we get there, he is sitting on the edge of the bed.

“I need you to lift my legs for me. I know it isn’t part of your job description—” he says regretfully.

“You don’t need to explain, I’m happy to help,” I cut him off.

“Hazel got injured getting off the bus today. She won’t be coming back. The agency doesn’t know when they’ll have someone new for me,” he explains, his voice strained probably from the pain.

“I guess you’re lucky I’m here,” I say with a smile.

Syd nods.

“Ellie, I need help getting in and out of bed. I need meals brought to me. I need help with the bath.” He winces.

“I can help,” I assure.

“With the bath?” He cocks a brow.

I mean, who wouldn’t be curious about seeing a hot man like him naked.

“Maybe you could put on a bathing suit?” I offer because he doesn’t need to know I have a dirty mind.
