“Seriously. Fuck that,” Ellie confirms. “You’re such a good dad. I see how you are with Syd.”

“Thanks,” I say. “I better find myself an attorney.”

“I can ask Nana tomorrow for a recommendation. My nana knows powerful people in high places,” Ellie says.

I watch her like she is my angel. She’s been helping me every step of the way since she walked into this house.

“That would be seriously helpful. I don’t know where to start,” I admit. I’m so tense from the conversation with Sybil I want to punch the wall, but I’m also terrified. Sybil has money to fight me. Endless money.

“Sure, Connor.” She reaches out and touches my shoulder. I don’t know how much of her touch I can handle before I lose my cool and claim her. It’s probably good I’m injured right now and not physically capable of acting on impulse.

“Sybil is coming to town in a couple of weeks. She wants to spend the day with Syd so she can get to know her fiancé. I hate that she barely knows our daughter and I can’t say no to her. I told her it would only work if you were with Syd since she’s comfortable with you,” I say. “I don’t need my ex snatching her on a private plane to Canada.” I clench and unclench my fists.

“Shit, Connor. Do you think she could do that?” Ellie asks.

“I wouldn’t put it past her. She grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth. She thinks everything is owed to her,” I explain, and I roll my neck as tension rolls off me in waves.

“I did too, and yet I think nothing is owed to me,” she replies with a quiver in her lip. “Syd means everything to me. I’m going to watch her like it’s nobody’s business.”

“Thanks, Ellie. I don’t know what we would do without you.” My gaze drops to her tits. I am so riled up right now, I can’t see straight.

“Why don’t you start by putting on some clothes. It’s getting hot in here.” She waves a hand in her face with a chuckle, clearly trying to lighten the mood.

Only my mood isn’t light. I’m angry and worked up. My eyes lock with Ellie’s and then I’m staring at her pert nipples through her shirt.

“Ellie, you not wearing a bra is going to be the end of me,” I state.

She shifts, pressing her thighs together. I bet if I wanted to take her here in the bathroom she would let me, but I will not go there.

“Dammit.” I squeeze my eyes shut, trying not to think how I want to suck on her nipples and make her come. “We can’t go there, Ellie. We can’t mess this up. Syd is speaking to you. That’s huge.”

“I agree.” She nods. “Syd comes first. I’ve really grown to care for her. I tried not to tear up when she started talking to me.”

“I saw and it made me want you more,” I confess, my heart beating fast and my breaths coming quick. “Leave my room, Ellie. I’m not thinking responsibly right now. I want to take you on my bed and I’m not even in physical shape to do that.”

“I’m going. I’ll have to go back to my room and get myself off after this little encounter.”

“Fuck,” I hiss. “You’re driving me crazy.”

She grins and turns on her heel, giving me a visual of that perfect behind. We would be fire together. I give my head a shake.Your life is too complicated. You can’t bring her into your messy life. She deserves better and Syd is talking to her. She comes first.

CHAPTERTEN

Ellie

Connor allowed me to take Syd on the bus. Now she sits glued to my side as we make our way over to Fifth. The bus ride is just long enough for my mind to go down the gutter and remember the heated bathroom encounter with Connor last night.

The way he told me to leave made my skin burn and the ache in my belly grow. He was angry and vibrating tension. It would be a dream for him to take it all out on me. Only his restraint was a little too controlled, which meant I had to get myself off twice to the thought of him wrapped in the towel. That deep scowl on his face.

“This is so weird,” Syd whispers from beside me, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Why?” I ask. Connor mentioned she’s never taken public transportation before and may be a little nervous.

“It’s different from the school bus,” she explains.

“Makes sense. This bus is for people of all ages,” I explain while looking around at the diversity on the bus. I had also never taken public transportation until I severed ties with my family. It takes getting used to when you’ve had your own car or driver all your life.

“What is your nana like?” she asks. “Crew doesn’t see his grandma often and I don’t have a grandma.”
