He’s speechless and he looks so emotional.

“I know,” I agree. “I wasn’t expecting her to talk and when she did. . .”

“Yeah. . .” he agrees. We don’t even finish what we are saying but we both get the gravity of what happened today.

“I spoke with Nana. I have the number for the attorney, and she said she will call him herself to let him know we’ll be calling,” I explain.

“She doesn’t have to do that. I don’t expect your family to get involved.”

“I know, but Nana knows Syd is important to me. She wants to help and she’s kind of badass.”

“I’d like to meet her some time too,” he says, surprising me.

“She would like that,” I say, and I bite my lip.

“What is it?”

“I kind of told her about Syd’s mom coming to town and she wants to hire security to follow Syd and me when her mom is here. You know, just to make sure Sybil doesn’t try to pull something. . .I know it’s excessive, but that’s my nana. When it comes to the people she loves, there are no lengths she won’t go to.”

Connor blinks and his lips spread into a thin line. “I appreciate that. Sybil’s family is powerful and . . .” He looks off to the side, away from me. “I haven’t had family in my corner for a long time.”

I reach out and take his hand in mine. It feels warm and touching him elicits all kinds of feelings inside me.

“I want to kiss the hell out of you,” he says, throwing me off. He squeezes his eyes shut. “I shouldn’t have said that. I haven’t been with a woman in a long time. . .”

I rise from the couch and walk over to the recliner. I lean over the side and bend, pressing my lips to his. Hot sparks flow from my lips through my body. His hand comes up to my neck and he deepens the kiss as a feral groan escapes him.

“What are we doing?” He pauses.

“Kissing,” I state the obvious.

“Syd could see us and get the wrong idea, and with all this shit drama I have going on, it’s better I limit the casualties in my life,” he says, and I wince.

I pull away. “I’ll go check on Syd.”

“Okay,” he states quietly.

When I walk away, I feel like I have my heart in my throat. Everything just feels off, but I’ve learned something new. Connor and I have serious chemistry. I haven’t felt this kind of attraction before so even though he’s hesitant, I sure as hell am not backing down. The grumpy goalie is going to have to realize I’m it for him. Now, where to start?

CHAPTERELEVEN

Connor

Ellie walks into the apartment after a visit with her nana. “Did he call?” she asks of the attorney her nana recommended.

“Finally, it’s been five days,” I say. “He booked me an appointment for tomorrow. Liam is going to drive me there.”

“Okay, that’s good. Nana said he was the best,” Ellie assures. For the rates he’s charging I’m sure he is. Nothing is too much for my daughter.

“Come, I want to show you something,” I say to her. My mobility is improving. I’ve been walking without crutches this week.

“Sure, let me just put these down,” she says of the paper bags in her hands.

I nod and watch her saunter off to the kitchen. She’s wearing a pair of gray leggings with a cropped pink sweatshirt. Her auburn hair flows down her back and I watch the sway of her hips, paying close attention to her round ass. It’s a miracle I’ve kept my hands to myself with her.

“Okay, what’s up?” she returns with a fresh smile.

“Follow me.” I grin, feeling triumphant.
