Mia glares at Max, “Remember he’s my husband and I love him. Oh, and the father of your niece or nephew.”

He groans, “Yeah yeah. Got it. Scram.”

Arching an eyebrow, Mia growls, “Watch it, bro. I’m reluctant to stab you but it’s not totally off limits.”

She turns and storms off outside.

Max grabs a bottle of whiskey and two glasses and pours us both two fingers before sliding a glass across the island to me.

“Thank you. Much better than the pussy drinks your wife made.”

He chuckles, “I told her the guys wouldn’t want margaritas, but she said this was the girls pool party. Savannah really liked hers, so I guess that’s what matters. It is her party.”

“Virgin I assume.”

He glares at me, “Obviously.”

I take a seat at the island, “What did you want to talk about?”

Max takes a gulp of his drink before setting it down, “We’ve been friends for a long time, Trevor. I hired you because I trusted you. That is no longer the case. We’re going to have to let you go.”

I lift my drink to my lips and down the contents before slamming it down, “You’re firing me?”

He lets out a long sigh, “If you were anyone else, I’d kill you for what you’ve done to my sister. Yes, I’m firing you. We can’t work together without trust. You’re terminated immediately.”

I have worked with Max my entire adult life. My chest throbs with the feeling of a knife being twisted.

“I know what I did was wrong. I’ve apologized to Mia. Not for getting her pregnant, I’ll never regret that. But for the dishonesty and the underhanded way I did it.”

He shakes his head, “You’re married to my sister. There is nothing I can do about that. We will still have to see each other because of Mia and now her child. The friendship we had is over. Our work relationship is over.”

I rise, ready to storm out, but add, “You put Mia in charge if I remember correctly. It’s her decision. If my wife wishes to fire me then so fucking be it. And you’re right Max, our friendship is over. You don’t mean a fucking thing to me. Given the option I’d put a bullet in your fucking brain. The only reason I won’t is because it’d gut my wife.”

With that, I turn and walk out, leaving the miserable asshole to drink by himself.

I walk outside and see what used to be my family playing volleyball in the pool, laughing, and a vision of happiness. They won’t be mine for long except for Mia. I will be ostracized. Before long, Mia will be asked to come alone. Will she? I’m not sure, but I do know it’s an impossible position for her to be in. She spots me as I take a seat at one of the patio tables. With a worried expression, she climbs out of the pool and approaches me.

“What happened?”

I shake my head, “Nothing, Kitten. Go have fun.”

She sits her beautiful, wet body on my lap and wraps her arms around my neck, “Trev, you look heartbroken. Now tell me what happened.”

I wrap my arms around her waist, “Your brother fired me.”

Mia laughs, “What really happened?”

“Your brother fired me.”

Her laughter stops abruptly as she searches my face in confusion, “He can’t do that. Not without my agreement.”

I kiss her on the neck, “It’s done, Kitten. It’s fine. I have more than enough money. You and our baby are everything I need.”

My firecracker jumps off my lap and races into the kitchen. I follow her to make sure she’s okay, which I know she’s not. If I’m honest, I don’t only want to make sure she’s okay. Angry Mia is fucking hot. I never want to miss a moment when my beautiful psycho is around.

Max is still sitting at the island when Mia approaches him and smacks him across the face, “You’re fired!”

He laughs as he rubs his cheek, “I had to do what’s best for all of us.”
