The killer on the left pulls out his cell, looks at it then nods. “You can go through. She stays here with us.”

Maxxy’s mouth drops open, but she says nothing.

“Nope! Not part of the deal. She goes where I go.”

“We don’t allow women to enter the premises.”

I fold my arms over my chest in annoyance, mimicking them. “I don’t give one fuck. She’s with me. She’s a vital member of Defiance. You don’t let her in, we’re gonna have abigfucking problem. You tell that to Cain and see what he thinks.”

The two soldiers glance at each other. Then the murderous one steps away from us and uses his radio to signal through. The asshole left with us runs his eyes up and down Maxxy like she’s his next fucking meal.

Maxxy curls her lip up at him. “No fucking way. Keep your eyes and hands to yourself, asshole.”

He chuckles, raising his hands in the air. “You’d fit in here. That’s all I’m saying.”

“Fuck off.”

The asshole glances at me, and I shrug. “You heard the lady.”

He refolds his arms across his chest and leans back against the building, placing one foot behind him on the wall.

After a minute or two, the other soldier comes back. “Any member of Defiance is an ally to the Bachelors. You’re welcome inside.”

Maxxy stands taller and chuckles. “Aren’t you glad you didn’t treat me like a piece of ass now?”

The asshole leaning against the building cranes his neck to the side and lets us pass as he opens the door.

Walking through the tattered, rusty, old corrugated iron door, it looks more like a ship building yard to the outside world. But as I step inside, I take in the Bachelors’ home base, which is not what I expected for an elite establishment. We move into the large expanse, which, on the surface, appears to be an abandoned building. It has shipping containers and sections of plastic sheeting scattered everywhere.

As we continue, I kick an empty soup can out of my way. I glance at Maxxy, and she smirks.

“Great digs,” she mock whispers.

At the back wall, another brute of a man is standing, wearing the same bomber jacket and slacks. He’s much bigger than the two outside, standing over six foot six, built like a linebacker, and his jacket barely covers his damn bulging muscles. Got to admit even I wouldn’t like to go one-on-one with him, and I know how to handle myself. The soldier stands next to the shelves holding cans of paint that look like they’re supposed to be there. I nod to him, and he furrows his brows at me. “You Defiance?” he grunts.

“Yeah… we’re here to see Cain.”

He turns, saying nothing more, and slides the shelving system to the side, revealing an entrance. I raise my brow as we both step forward into the deep-red-painted hallway. The heavy grinding sound of the shelves moving back in place behind us is clear as we make our way down the long hall.

I roll my shoulders, trying to rid myself of the uneasiness flowing through me. The crappy façade was a front, and I can’t help but think we’re heading into the real Bachelor establishment. At the end of the hall, we turn left, and it opens into the main parlor.

The space is like a movie set—huge Chesterfield sofas, men smoking cigars, roulette tables, and a giant mahogany bar with a bartender serving drinks.

And women—lotsof topless women.

I shift, uncomfortable.

Maxxy shakes her head at the blatant misogyny in the room. “Figures,” she mumbles under her breath.

Cain steps up with a bright smile, placing out his hand for me to shake. “Hoodoo, glad you could make it.”

I shake his hand and dip my head toward Maxxy. “Cain, this is the club horticulturalist, Maxxy. Maxxy, this is Cain.”

Cain chuckles. “So she’s the brains. Guessing the club can’t live without her, huh?”

I glance at her and nod. “Yeah… basically.”

“Awww… you can’t live without me,” Maxxy quips.
