“Fuck, thanks, Maxxy.”

I step up to him, grabbing his arm as he stumbles. “You okay?”

“Gonna have one hell of a headache…” he states as a couple of bullets fly past us, smashing a glass on the table beside us into pieces. “You shouldn’t be in here.”

We both duck as City grabs his gun, turns, and shoots the Bachelor who was aiming at us. He falls from the DJ deck he was standing on and plummets face-first onto the concrete floor.

I grimace as I wrap my arm around City to help him, but he shakes his head. “No, you have to get out of here. I gotta stay and fight.”

I scowl at him. “City, you can hardly walk. Youhave to get out of here, andIhave to stay and fight!”

“Maxxy, if I let you stay here, Hoodoo will slice off my balls and feed them to La Fin. C’mon, let’s both get out of here,” he states, and I huff.

I need to get City to safety.

I help walk him toward the exit, trying to dodge dead bodies as I go, bullets flying past us every step of the way.

I can’t believe this is all happening because of me.

Because of Selene.

I need to find her.

But first, I have to help City.

I edge him outside toward the exit. I just get him out the door when two Bachelors rush up beside us, aiming their guns at us before we have a second to react.

Goddammit!

“Defiance scum, you’re gonna pay for this,” one of them says as I hold City tighter.

He presses the butt of his gun to my temple, and I clench my eyes tight. Then I hear the bang of the gun go off. My body jerks, but I feel nothing. My breathing is frantic, and I slowly open my eyes to see the Bachelors, both dead on the floor.

“Cutting it a bit close there, Maxxy,” South from LA states as he winks at me.

I sigh, relieved, as I spot the LA Defiance brothers rushing in down the alley.

The cavalry has arrived.

“You took your sweet-ass time getting here,” I state as City raises his brow.

“You knew they were coming?” he asks.

I roll my shoulders. “I put in the call. I had a feeling this wouldn’t go down so simply, and we might need some help. I didn’t want to burden Hurricane with the details.”

City snorts out a laugh. “Oh… he’s gonna want details.”

I turn to South and dip my head. “Thank you… for answering my call and getting Alpha to allow your guys to come.”

“You know Alpha’s always down for a fight. But while we’re here yammering, those guys are shooting at our brothers. City, sit this one out. Let us go handle whoever is left,” South states.

City exhales and slowly takes a seat on the curb. “Yeah, all right. I’m out.”

South grips City’s shoulder, then he and the others take off inside.

I turn back to City and grimace. “I’m sorry to do this to you, City, but Ihaveto go back in there.”

He exhales, grabs a knife from his belt, and hands it to me. “Just be fucking safe, Max.”
