I grew up admiring the club from a distance.

Wishing I had the family atmosphere that Hurricane and Bayou had with the club.

Hell, even Novah seemed to be a part of it all.

The only one who didn’t appreciate club life was Nash. He was too concerned about following in his father’s footsteps to be worried about the club.

Growing up next door to Hurricane’s family was where my life changed. Thank God Hurricane’s stepmother, Ingrid, took me under her wing when my parents were being the absent assholes they were.

Taking a long breath, I sigh, thinking about how different my life would be if my parents had moved us into a different house. One where Ingrid and Reaper weren’t living next door.

Eventually, Ingrid and Reaper moved out and went to live at the clubhouse, but it wasn’t until I was much older and could take care of myself.

We never lost touch.

Even when I went to jail.

The Ladet family was always there for me.

Especially Hurricane.

He always looked out for me.

I think that’s why when he learned about my horticultural degree, he jumped at the chance to have me run the poppy farm. Not only to keep me out of trouble but so he could keep an eye on me. So he can ensure I’m taken care of.

“That’s a heavy sigh. You contemplating driving us into the back of that logging truck? If movies tell us anything, it’s that any minute now, those logs are gonna fall off and crush us anyway, so it’s all good if you wanna make it happen sooner.”

Smirking, I side-eye Hoodoo. “Dark… andseriously? You’re gonna bring upFinal Destinationwhen I can’t change lanes right now?”

He chuckles, elbowing me in the ribs. “Didn’t think of you as the superstitious type.”

Groaning, I lift my foot off the accelerator, pulling back from the logging truck—just in case.“Don’t wanna risk it. Anyway, you’ve probably jinxed us now, fucker.”

Hoodoo laughs. “Well, I can think of worse ways to go. Being crushed to death next to you isn’t the worst death in the world.”

I glance at him. “I can’t tell if that was a compliment or not.”

“I’m just saying… if I die today, and it’s next to you, I’m okay with that.”

I snort out a laugh. “Again, I can’t tell if that is a compliment or if you just have a death wish?”

“Take it how you will.” He smirks.

Rolling my eyes, I see the lane open up next to me, and I flick on my blinker and seize the moment, changing lanes and getting out from behind the fucking truck. “You’re impossible.”

“And you’re predictable.”

I scrunch my brows together, gritting my teeth at his insult. Slamming my foot down on the accelerator, I floor it passed the truck. Hoodoo jerks back in his seat with the force as I take off at high speed. My fingers white knuckle the steering wheel while I breathe harshly out of my nose.

“Maxxy, slow down. There’s a sharp turn coming up.”

I ignore him and slam my foot down on the pedal harder.

“Maxxy!” He grunts.

But I shift gears, coming to the sharp turn.

“Fuck!” Hoodoo calls out as I spin the tires and drift around the bend. The tires squeal as I grip the steering wheel tight, pulling the car around the curve. My adrenaline spikes, the thrill racing through me. It’s been so long since I’ve done anything like this. The last time was when I tried to outrun the cops. I crashed my car and ended up in the slammer for my hard work.
