Maxxy hums under her breath. “Mm-hmm, and is this from a bullet? Did someone shoot you last night while I was sleeping?”
I shake my head. “I was stabbed with a surgical scalpel… three times.”
She raises her brow. “You’re just a glutton for punishment, aren’t you?”
I sigh. “You don’t want to know who stabbed me?”
Maxxy moves, sitting up in the bed. “You’ll tell me if you want me to know. I know that club business is exactly that… club business. And sometimes outsiders aren’t allowed to know shit.”

“You’re right, most of the time, club business is confidential, but in this case, I think you deserve to know what went down last night.”
She shrugs. “Okay, I’m listening.”
Letting out a long exhale, I move to face her. “Raid searched to see if there was someone we could bring in to hurt Anton as payback… and we found someone. A babysitter with whom he’s also having an affair, but… there’s more to it than that.”
Maxxy tilts her head. “What do you mean?”
“The babysitter… I recognized her. It was Charlotte, the nurse who looked after me in the hospital. She’d been working with Anton since his kids were born, but he’d been hiding who he was from her, and she had no idea he was Bratva.”

So when we started telling her, she backed him. She didn’t care what he’d done. The woman was making excuses for him, so much so she lunged for the scalpel and stabbed me in the shoulder.”
Maxxy widens her eyes in disbelief. “Charlottestabbedyou?”
“She went for my jugular, Maxxy. She wanted to kill me… I had no choice but to defend myself.”
Maxxy jerks back, looking me up and down, shaking her head. “Charlotte’s—” She doesn’t finish the sentence, but I know what she’s saying, so I nod.
“Yeah… she’s gone.”
Maxxy inhales deeply, leans forward, and hugs me tight. “Are you okay? That must have been so difficult. Traumatic for you. I know you liked her.”
Closing my eyes, I sink into Maxxy, wrapping myself around her and taking all the comfort I can. “I fucking hate Anton for making me do that to her. Maxxy, something inside Charlotte snapped.”
Maxxy pulls back, looking into my eyes. “It’s gonna be okay. As long as Anton never finds out you guys took her, it should be okay…right?”
Nodding, I exhale. “Yeah. Bayou deleted the recording we took, and they’re cremating her body. Hopefully, we can make it look like she’s just… well, missing.”
Maxxy shifts closer, her hand coming up to gently caress my face. “It’ll be fine. I know it will. Plus, if Anton comes after you, he has to go throughmefirst.”
I chuckle, leaning forward and pressing my lips to hers.How can someone taste so damn good first thing in the morning?I slide my tongue into her mouth and kiss her a little harder, my hand sliding into her hair, holding her to me.
