Things with Hoodoo are progressing rapidly, and though I wasn’t sure we were ever going to head down this path, I must admit, I sure do like where we’re going.

There is one thing that does sit in the back of my mind, and it is constant.

The way ‘N’ plays in my thoughts.

The way I want to always dash off to write to him.

The way I desperately want to tell him everything that’s going on.

But I just don’t know if telling him that I’m seeing someone romantically is something I should do. There’s always been a little bit of flirtation between him and me. Maybe the promise thatmorewould develop between us if given the chance.

I certainly felt that way.

I think I was hanging onto that hope.

It’s why I feel such a deep, rich connection to him.

But maybe ‘N’ is just a damn fantasy.

Maybe writing to someone you have never met is not a logical way to invest your time and emotions. Especially when I have a flesh and blood all-alpha male right before me, willing to give me his time of day.

Hoodoo is definitely a surprise I wasn’t expecting, but one I am willing to grab onto with both hands. I now have to figure out what that means for ‘N,’ and whether I can have my cake and eat it too, as they say, or whether having Hoodoo means I need to lay ‘N’ to rest.

With all these thoughts running through my mind, I’m in my own world as I walk toward the office, but a faint voice calling my name pulls me back into the here and now. I snap my head around to see Tomás and smile as he runs up to me. “Maxxy! I’m so glad you’re here…” he gushes, puffing like he’s out of breath.

I reach out, placing my hand on his shoulder. “Take a breath, and tell me what’s going on.”

He slows his breathing, then exhales. “There’s some woman here claiming she needs to see you. She won’t leave until she’s spoken to you, and she’s flirting with all the guys making them not want to work.”

Furrowing my brows, I glance over my shoulder. “What woman?”

Tomás scrunches up his face like he’s thinking. Then he nods as he remembers. “I think she said her name was… Selene?”

My stomach twists, my eyes widen as I spin, trying to figure out where the fuck she is. “She’s here?Right now?”I blurt out.

“In the warehouse with the guys. I don’t know who let her back there, but she’s making one hell of a scene.”

Scrubbing at my face in frustration, I let out a small groan. “Fuck!” I mentally prepare myself for whatever is about to be thrown my way and steady my shoulders. “Okay, let’s go.”

Tomás leads the way, walking me over to the warehouse, the sounds of laughter coming from inside as I pull back the plastic curtain drapes and step inside the giant area. And like a beacon of fire, she sits—bright red dress, split up the side showing off her tanned and toned legs, one leg crossed over the other, giant hooker heels flashing the red sole underneath, and the brightest red lipstick sparkling in the light. Her boobs are out on display as her flowing, long red hair is flicked over her shoulder, showing painted red nails and her clearly fake laughter.

Selene is the complete opposite of me. Where this woman is the total bombshell, I am more your tough, Lara Croft-type woman with shorter hair and tattoos. But no one should be fooled by Selene’s appearance. Behind those luscious locks and the bright red lips are the mind and the soul of someone so dark and twisted that it’s almost like a disguise she wears to hide the fact she is a cold, calculating monster.

But, without that monster, without her manipulating ways, I wouldn’t have survived in prison. She took me under her wing. She protected me. She made sure no one came after me. Because I was young, I was vulnerable, weak, and an easy target. Selene taught me shit I needed to survive not only in the system but out here in this world too.

I wouldn’t be the woman I am today if it weren’t for her.

That’s why it both hurts me—that I screwed her over—and terrifies me. Because I know what she is capable of. The fact we became good friends in the slammer means nothing once you betray that friendship.

Inhaling deeply, I swallow hard and straighten my shoulders. Here goes nothing.I casually stride forward. The guys spot me first as Selene’s back is to me, so she can’t see me, but the guys who work for me widen their eyes and stop laughing like they think they’re in trouble. And normally, they would be for letting someone back here who isn’t fully vetted, all because they want to get their dicks wet. Normally, I would run them over the hot coals for being so fucking careless with what we have built here.

But it’s Selene, so I need to be careful.

I don’t want her to go off the deep end.

So I plaster on a fake-ass smile and step in beside her.

“You guys have all gone quiet. Is there something in my teeth?” Selene asks, licking her teeth and smiling wide as I move into view. Her smile widens when she spots me, but I can instantly tell it’s fake. “Oh, Maxxy, you’re here. It’s about time. I was starting to think you were playing hooky on your birthday.”
