She chuckles to herself and starts walking for the exit. “Because seeing you uncomfortable and hurting every day for three years will give me nothing but absolute, undeniable, and insurmountable pleasure.”

My stomach twists, knowing the hell she will put me through.

Maybe going to jail would be better than spending three years as her damn lackey?

But Selene is right.

I had it easy in there last time.

I had her protection.

And if I went in again, I’m sure she would make it so my time inside was a misery. Plus, I wouldn’t just be getting time for stabbing Alina. It would also be for obstruction of justice and possibly tampering with evidence, and then I could be charged with conspiracy. I don’t even know what that would add to my sentence. Let alone the pull the Bachelors have. I could end up in jail for ten years, maybe more.

I can’t risk that.

And by the look on her face, she knows she has me over a barrel.

It kills me to even think of leaving Defiance. I have worked so fucking hard to build this place, and my bottom lip trembles, my eyes flooding with tears as I stare at her. “When do you want me to start?”

Selene claps her hands together and lets out a sadistic laugh. “That’s the spirit, but I’m not a monster, Maxxy. I know you have people here you need to say goodbye to and loose ends here at The Plantation you need to tie up. So I can give you until the end of February to get everything squared away. But by the end of next month, I want you settled in Baton Rouge. No questions asked. Ready to start. This is going to be great,” she mocks, then walks out of my office.

My heart sinks, my mind shifting to Hoodoo. We only just started, and now I have to move away. And honestly, when I tell him this, I have a feeling he will lose his shit.

So I need to find a way to calm him down.

Because honestly, I don’t see a way out of this.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Hoodoo

Later That Day

After what happened with Charlotte, I’ve been spending today going over shit with Hurricane. Going over every fine detail about how we can keep this from Anton.

Raid has been monitoring his systems, and we’re pretty sure Anton knows she’s missing. Still, Raid has gone over all the footage he’s been able to source from the hospital of us arriving to grab Charlotte and the street cams of our van leading up to the hospital to cover our tracks.

Any evidence of us being there should be erased.

As long as Raid is sure he has it all.

If not—if we missed evenonepiece of evidence that Novikov can find—we could be in for a world of hurt. We just have to hope that Raid is focused and doing his due diligence because if my fuck-up leads to anyone here getting hurt, I won’t forgive myself.

But as the day draws closer to the end, my mind shifts to thinking about Maxxy. I can’t help but wonder how she’s doing, and I pull out my cell to call her when the proximity alert sounds for the gate. We all glance up as Raid draws out his cell to check, but he shakes his head, raising his hand. “It’s all good. It’s just Maxxy.”

I can’t stop the smile that lights my face as I slide my cell back into my pocket and head for the door. I spot the girls smirking at me and roll my eyes at them. “Shut up.” I groan, and Kaia chuckles.

“What? We didn’t say anything,” she replies.

I walk past all the old ladies who are snickering to themselves as I pass them. “You didn’t have to.”

Lani sits taller, shrugging her shoulders. “It’s cute the way you smile when someone says her name.”

The other girls burst into a fit of giggles as I flip them all the bird and continue walking outside, though I don’t let them see my smile as I go.

Because they’re right.

Maxxy does make me smile.
